Swim Teams Compete at Eastern Michigan Invitational
MEN'S AND WOMEN'S SWIMMING
YPSILANTI -- The Calvin men's and women's swim teams closed out two days of competition at the Eastern Michigan Invitational on Saturday with the women's team finishing fifth in a field of 10 teams with 242 points while the men's team was fifth in a field of eight teams with 257 points.
On the women's side, junior Cara VanWoerkom (Calvin Christian HS) posted a pair of NCAA III conditional qualifying cuts, taking fifth in the 100 freestyle (53.12) and 200 freestyle (1:55.67). She also placed seventh in the 50 freestyle (24.59), just missing a conditional qualifying cut. Sophomore Emily Roberts (Dekalb, IL) also had a conditional qualifying time of 1:06.53 in taking sixth in the 100 breaststroke.
Other highlights for the Calvin women included sophomore Maggie Vail (Portage Northern HS) posting a time of 1:08.59 in the 100 breaststroke and a time of 2:27.64 in the 200 breaststroke.
On the men's side, Calvin had a trio of top-10 individual performances in individual events on Saturday as junior Keith Conrad (Wheaton, IL) was ninth in the 500 freestyle (4:50.60); senior Joe Gluvers (Rocklin, CA) ninth in the 200 backstroke (2:00.03) and senior John Boumgarden (Naperville, IL) ninth in the 50 freestyle (22.0).
Calvin's divers did not compete at the Eastern Michigan Invitational on Saturday but were at the Grand Valley State Invitational instead. Results of the GVSU Invite were not available as of Saturday night.
