Women's Basketball Pulls Away for Win at Kalamazoo in MIAA Opener

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Calvin 64, Kalamazoo 43

KALAMAZOO -- Calvin opened its MIAA campaign on a winning note Tuesday evening, defeating Kalamazoo 64-43 at the Anderson Athletic Center. Ranked sixth in the latest D3hoops.com Top-25 poll, Calvin (4-0 overall, 1-0 MIAA) led 33-26 at halftime but used an 11-0 run to open the second half to put the game away.

Sophomore Brook VanEck (Lowell HS) scored seven of her 11 points in the opening second half run, allowing the Knights to take a double-digit lead they would never relinquish. Junior Marcia Harris (Grand Rapids Christian HS) combined with VanEck in the post to score 14 points on 7-of-12 shooting. Junior Lauren Roodvoets (South Christian HS) also came off the bench to provide four points, five rebounds and two blocked shots in the post. Senior Nikki Zimmerman (Traverse City West HS) added nine points for Calvin while sophomore Allison Griswold (Lansing Christian HS) had eight points including a pair of three-point field goals.

Kalamazoo (1-2 overall, 0-1 MIAA) was led in scoring by Nyemade Cooper with 12 points while Andrea Bedway had 10.

Kalamazoo committed 21 turnovers which led to 27 Calvin points. Calvin's bench also outscored Kalamazoo's reserves 18-6. Calvin also had a solid floor game as the Knights collected 20 assists while committing just 14 turnovers. Zimmerman and junior Kelly Trewhella (Rockford HS) had four assists apiece for the Knights with Trewhella also scoring seven points on 3-of-4 shooting.

Calvin also shot 45.9 percent from the floor while Kalamazoo shot just 33.9 percent from the field.

"We distributed the ball well tonight and played strong team basketball," said Calvin women's basketball coach John Ross. "I also thought our defense was very good. Hopefully we can keep up our defensive intensity this weekend."

Calvin returns to action on Friday when it takes on Wheaton College (IL) in a first round game of the CCIW/MIAA Classic at 6:00 p.m. Hope College will serve as host of the women's tournament this year. The Flying Dutch will take on Carthage at 8:00 p.m. in the second game on Friday night. On Saturday, Calvin will face Carthage at 1:00 p.m. and Hope will meet Wheaton at 3:00 p.m. All four games will take place at Hope's DeVos Fieldhouse.
