MEN'S BASKETBALL
For the third time in his collegiate career, Calvin junior point guard Caleb
Veldhouse has been named MIAA Player of the Week in men's basketball. A native
of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Veldhouse scored 64 points this past weekend at
the Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame Classic held at Cornerstone University. A
graduate of Sioux Falls Christian High School, Veldhouse scored 32 points in an
87-82 first round victory over Cornerstone Friday night and then scored 32
points in a 90-88 double-overtime defeat to Aquinas in the championship game
Saturday night. His three-pointer as time expired at the end of regulation sent
Saturday's game with Aquinas into overtime. He was subsequently named to the
all-tournament team.
The scoring performances by Veldhouse marked the first time that a Calvin
player had scored 30 points in back-to-back games since Aaron Winkle did so in
February of 1999. Veldhouse also became just the third Calvin player to score
30 points on back-to-back nights, joining Mark Veenstra who did so on January 2
and 3 in 1976 and Mike Phelps who did so on December 27 and 28 of 1967.
During the tournament, he was 22-of-38 (.579) from the field, 6-of-11 (.545)
from 3-point range and 14-of-19 (.737) at the free throw line. He also grabbed
seven rebounds and picked up two assists and two steals.
Veldhouse is currently averaging 24.8 points a game and is shooting 51.6
percent from the field including 54.5 from the field.
Veldhouse is the second Calvin player in as many weeks to receive the honor as
Derek Griffin received the award last week.
Calvin returns to action on Friday when it hosts Carthage at 8:00 p.m. as part
of the CCIW/MIAA Challenge. Hope and Wheaton will play at 6:00 p.m. in the
first game on Friday night. On Saturday, Hope and Carthage will play at 2:00

DIRECTOR'S CUP STANDINGS UPDATE
The U.S. Sports Academy Directors' Cup opens its 13th year for Division III
and for the third year in a row, Calvin College has taken one of the top two
spots in the first set of Division III standings released.
Leading with a pair of fourth place finishes in men's and women's cross
country, Calvin has posted 210 points in the first set of standings. Amherst of
Massachusetts leads with 227 points. The Knights also placed 17th in women's
volleyball. The fourth place performance by the Calvin men’s and women's
cross country teams were each worth 80 points. Calvin’s volleyball finish
counted for 50 points.
The first set of standings does not include field hockey, men's and women's
soccer or football.
Calvin has also scored points in men's and women's soccer but those points are
not reflected in the first set of standings. The final fall standings will be
released on December 20. Competition will continue with the winter sports
season and finish with the conclusion of the spring sports season in May.
The U.S. Sports Academy Director's Cup is based on points earned by teams that
compete in NCAA Championship events and is presented annually by the National
Association of Collegiate Director's of Athletics (NACDA) to the best overall
collegiate athletics program in the country. The NACDA Director's Cup race is
held at the NCAA I, II and III levels and also for NAIA institutions.
Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in NCAA III Championship
competition in up to 18 sports -- nine for men and nine for women. Each
national champion receives 100 points with a national runner-up finish worth 90
points. Third place is worth 85 points and fourth place finishes count for 80
points with a sliding point scale continuing on down by order of finish.
A year ago, Calvin finished eighth in the final Division III standings with a
total of 713 points.
Calvin is one of only eight schools to finish in the top-25 every year that
the competition has been held at the NCAA III level.

The MIAA Commissioner's Cup standings through the recently completed fall
sports season have been released and Calvin is in second place with 86 points,
10 points behind Hope.
In the MIAA women's all-sports standings however, Calvin leads the standings
with 54 points with Hope second with 47 points. Hope leads the MIAA men's

All-Sports standings will be determined on the basis of each college's
standings in eight of nine sports for men and eight of nine sports for women.
The standings after the fall season are based on all eight sports played to
date (four for men and four for women). As a single sport member (football),
Wisconsin Lutheran was not computed into the all-sports standings.
During the fall season, Calvin captured five MIAA titles -- winning in men's
and women's soccer, women's volleyball and in men's and women's cross country.
