PAUL PETERSEN UPDATE AT U.S. OLYMPIC MARATHON TRIALS
NEW YORK CITY, NY -- Competing in his first U.S. Olympic Marathon trials, 2001 Calvin graduate Paul Petersen had a strong performance, placing 53rd in a field of more than 100 runners with a time of 2:22.34 Saturday morning. A native of Crawfordsville, Indiana, Petersen now resides in Logan, Utah. At Calvin, Petersen was an All-America cross country runner and was a key component in Calvin's 2000 national championship men's cross country team.
Saturday's U.S. Olympic Marathon trials were held in New York City. During the race, Michigan native and U.S. Olympic hopeful Ryan Shay collapsed and died shortly after completing approximately five-and-a-half miles of the race. A graduate of Central Lake High School in Northern Michigan, Shay was a familiar name among Michigan running circles. Shay ran collegiately at the University of Notre Dame where he captured the NCAA Division I national title in the 10,000 meter run. Shay also ran against the Calvin men's cross country team during the late 1990s and early 2000's at the Notre Dame Invitational. Calvin has competed in the event, held every October, for several years. After graduating from Notre Dame, Shay became a highly successful runner on the road circuit. This past May, Shay took fourth in the 25K Fifth Third River Bank Run in Grand Rapids.
"Ryan Shay was a tremendous running talent and a great inspiration to runners in the state of Michigan," said Calvin head coach cross country coach Brian Diemer. "When you hear the news like we did yesterday about Ryan, it just leaves a lump in your throat. Our sincerest condolences and heartfelt prayers go out to his family."
The top three finishers at the U.S. Olympic Marathon trials qualified for the upcoming Summer Olympic games in Beijing, China. Qualifying for the U.S. team were Ryan Hall, Dathan Ritzenhein and Brian Sell. Ritzenhein is a native of Rockford and a local graduate of Rockford High School. Sell currently resides in Rochester Hills, Michigan. Sell was also the runner-up at the Fifth Third River Bank Run in Grand Rapids this past May.
