GRAND RAPIDS -- Calvin downed St. Mary’s in three games in Friday night’s
MIAA Tournament semi-final to advance to the tournament championship game
against Hope College. Tomorrow’s MIAA Tournament Championship game will be at
Calvin at 4 p.m.

Calvin will face Hope in the tournament title game for the third straight
year. Calvin defeated Hope in five games in the previous two title games and
has won the last three MIAA Tournaments. This season Calvin defeated Hope 3-1
at the Fieldhouse and fell to the Dutch 3-1 at the DeVos Fieldhouse in Holland.
The Knights’ loss in Holland was the team’s only conference loss this
season.

Calvin is 5-2 in MIAA tournament finals, appearing in all but one of the eight
championship games since the tournament was added in 1999. Additionally, Calvin
is 4-1 in tournament finals against Hope including 2-0 at the Field house.

In tonight’s semi-final, Calvin cruised past the Belles for the third time
this season. In game one Calvin never trailed posting a 30-18 victory. St.
Mary’s, who came into the tournament as the fifth seed, gathered its
composure, but couldn’t hold off the Knights. Calvin topped the Belles 30-23
in both games two and three to complete the three game sweep, the second time
Calvin swept St. Mary’s this season.

Molly Krikke (Greenwich, OH/ South Central) led Calvin with 16 kills while
Kristen Kalb (Stow, OH/ Stow Munroe Falls) added eleven. Krikke also led with
an impressive .306 attack percentage. Freshman Kim Wigboldy (Scottsdale, AZ/
Valley Christian) returned to form amassing eight kills and Sara Kramer
(Lansing, IL/ Illiana Christian) added seven.

Katie Zondervan (Lakewood, CA/ Valley Christian) totaled 46 assists and ten
digs. Calvin’s back row anchors libero Lauren DeGroot (Tulare, CA/ Central
Valley Christian) and Kelsey Sears (Traverse City/ Traverse City West) led with
13 and 12 digs respectively.

Calvin needs to win tomorrow’s tournament championship to receive the
leagues automatic NCAA bid. Calvin is 21-3 all-time in the MIAA tournament, but
home teams are just 4-4 all time in MIAA tournament finals. Tomorrow’s game
will be broadcast starting at 3:50 at calvin.edu/sports.
