Krikke/Zondervan Receive MIAA Player of the Week Honors in Volleyball;
Calvin Cross Country Runners Receive All-MIAA Honors;
Calvin Swim Teams Open Seasons at MIAA Relays

VOLLEYBALL

For the second time this year, Calvin College seniors Molly Krikke and Katie Zondervan have received MIAA Player of the Week honors. A native of Greenwich, Ohio, Krikke is the MIAA's Player of the Week while Zondervan, a native of Lakewood, California, is the MIAA's Specialty Player of the Week. Krikke had a .397 hitting percentage over five matches won by the Knights this past week. She averaged almost six kills per game, including a career-best 30 in a five-game win over Kalamazoo. She is being honored for the second time this season and the fifth time in her career.

A graduate of Central Valley Christian High School, Zondervan keyed three conference victories for the Knights who finished the league regular season with a 15-1 record. Over 10 games she was credited with 159 assists, 47 digs, five blocks and seven service aces. She is being honored for the second time this season and the eighth time in her career.

Calvin wrapped up its second straight MIAA regular season title this past weekend including its 16th overall. Ranked 16th in the latest Division III Top-25 poll, Calvin is scheduled to host a first round MIAA Tournament match on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. against the winner of a Monday night play-in match between Alma and Olivet.

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY

The All-MIAA men's and women's cross country teams have been announced and several Calvin runners have been so honored. Headlining the list of honored Calvin runners are seniors Tad Hulst and Christian Overbeck who have been named the MIAA's Most Outstanding Men's and Women's Runners respectively.

Hulst has also landed a spot on the All-MIAA first team and is joined on the honor list from Calvin by seniors Jon Gries and Dan VandenAkker and juniors Jed Christiansen, Nate DeHaan, Andrew Stutzman and Erik VanKampen.

On the women's side, Overbeck has landed a spot on the All-MIAA first team. Other Calvin runners named to the All-MIAA 1st team in women's cross country are senior Lynn Marsh, juniors Jesi Hale, Lauren Bergstrom and Calah Schlabach and sophomores Jessica Koster and Elizabeth Smit.

On the men's side, Hulst, Gries and Christiansen are all receiving All-MIAA honors for the first time. Hulst is from Zeeland and is a graduate of Zeeland High School. At the MIAA Championships this past Saturday at the Whiffletree Golf Course in Concord, Hulst took first place with a time of 25:30.7. A native of Greenville, Pennsylvania, and a graduate of Greenville High School, Christiansen took second at the MIAA Championships in a time of 25:30.8 while Gries was third in 25:31. Gries is from King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, and is a graduate of Upper Merion High School.

VanKampen and DeHaan are both receiving All-MIAA honors for the second time. VanKampen is from Elmhurst, Illinois, and is a graduate of Timothy Christian High School while DeHaan is from Byron Center and is a graduate of Grand Rapids South Christian High School. VanKampen took fifth at the MIAA Championships while DeHaan was sixth.

VandenAkker and Stutzman are both receiving All-MIAA honors for the first time. A native of Grand Rapids and a graduate of Grand Rapids South Christian High School, VandenAkker was fourth at the MIAA Championships. Stutzman is from Kutztown, Pennsylvania. A graduate of Kutztown High School, Stutzman took 10th at the MIAA Championships.

On the women's end, Overbeck and Schlabach are receiving All-MIAA first team honors for the third time. Overbeck is from Seattle, Washington. A graduate of Bellevue Christian High School, Overbeck took first at the MIAA Championships this past Saturday with a time of 22:03. Schlabach is from St. Michael's, Arizona. A graduate of St. Michael's High School, she placed third at the MIAA Championships in 22:37.

A native of North Vernon, Indiana, and a graduate of Jennings High School, Marsh is receiving All-MIAA honors for the second time. She placed seventh at the MIAA Championships. A native of Rochester, Minnesota, Bergstrom is also receiving All-MIAA accolades for the second time. A graduate of Century High School, Bergstrom took fourth at the MIAA Championships on Saturday. Koster, Hale and Smit are all receiving All-MIAA honors for the first time. Koster is from Grand Rapids and is a graduate of Grand Rapids Christian High School. She placed sixth at the MIAA Championships. Hale is from Rehoboth, New Mexico. A graduate of Gallup High School, Hale placed fifth at the MIAA Championships while Smith placed eighth. Smit is from Kirkland, Washington. She is a graduate of Bellevue Christian High School.

Both Calvin teams will now break until November 10 when they host the Great Lakes Regional Championships at the Gainey Athletic Complex. The Calvin men are currently ranked number-one in the latest Division III Top-25 poll while the Calvin women are ranked number-two.

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING

The Calvin men's and women's swim teams kicked off their seaons on Saturday, competiting at the MIAA Relays held at the Holland Aquatic Center. Saturday's competition was unscored and every event was a relay event.

On the women's side, Calvin took first place in five relay events. The Knights led off the meet with a win in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:52.71. The relay consisted of freshman Caitlin Alexander (Holland Christian HS), sophomore Emily Roberts (DeKalb, IL), junior Julie Wolfe (Westerville, IL) and senior Kat Vinson (Kaneohe, HI). Calvin's 200 breaststroke relay of Roberts, sophomore Maggie Vail (Portage Northern HS), senior Sarah Abbott (East Grand Rapids HS) and freshman Jean Buteyn (Eden Prairie, MN) also took first place with a time of 2:09.19.

Calvin's next victory came in the 500 freestyle relay as the quartet of Wolfe, freshman Kendra Kinzer (Fort Wayne, IN) freshman Lindsay Huizenga (Rockford HS) and sophomore Laura Price (Warren, PA) took first place with a time of 4:51.84. In the 200 butterfly relay, Wolfe, Vail, Price and Alexander clocked in with a first place time of 1:51.26 while its 400 medley relay of Buteyn, Roberts, junior Allison Rober (Logansport, IN) and Vail took first in a time of 4:16.49.

On the men's side, Calvin took first place in the 200 backstroke relay with a time of 1:44.93. The relay consisted of freshman Tyler Westman and sophomores Kurt VanAllsburg (Grand Rapids Christian HS), Jon Herrema (Grand Rapids Christian HS) and Atticus Tatum (Grand Rapids Christian HS).

Both Calvin swim teams return to action on Saturday when they compete in MIAA dual meets at Albion beginning at 1:00 p.m.
