WOMEN’S SOCCER
Calvin 2, Aquinas 1
(Written by Bruce VanBaren ’09)

The Knights survived unseasonably warm temperatures to top non-conference rival
Aquinas College 2-1 at Aquinas.

"It was brutal out here [today]," Coach Mark Recker said. In fact, there was
two additional breaks added to the game to give the players and referees a
chance to rehydrate.

But despite the temperatures, both teams came out shooting. After Aquinas
(11-2-0) pressured the first three minutes of the game, Natalie Veurink (Spring
Lake/ Western Michigan Christian) rifled a Kellie Honderd (Hudsonville/ Unity
Christian) cross into the upper nNineteen seconds later, however, Aquinas's Rebecca Underwood split the Calvin
defense and found the back of the net for the equalizer.

Because of the temperatures, Recker was forced to go deep into his bench and
use a much different rotation than the Knights normally do in a close game.

"Seeing a different combination of players creates a different type of rhythm,"
Recker said. "It gives the defense a much different look; we'd like to keep
defenses under duress."

With nearly all of Calvin's offensive starters on the bench just before the
half, however, an Ashley Bolen (Urbana, IL/ Urbana) corner kick found the foot
of Emily Ottenhoff (Tinley Park, IL/ Chicago Christian) and Ottenhoff
redirected the ball inside the front post to give Calvin a 2-1 lead.

"Towards the end of the first half with a new lineup in there, there was a
sense of freshness," Recker said. "We wouldn't have gotten that corner kick
goal if we hadn't had that freshness, that was critical for us."

Calvin's five corner kicks today give them a total of 85 on the season to their
opponents' 32 and the advantage has become a key to its offensive attack.

Another advantage for Calvin's attack has been its depth and speed at the
striker position. Recker rotated five players up top today with Honderd,
Elizabeth Ribbens (Tinley Park, IL/ Victor J. Andrew), Veurink, Minday
Capisciolto (Hudsonville/ Unity Christian) and Stephanie Malburg (Grand Rapids/
Forest Hills Northern).

"Defenses get used to a certain style of a player, and players lose momentum if
they are being defended for a while," Recker said. "When I rotate different
players up there it gives defenses a much different look, it pushes the defense
to make adjustments."

Calvin's defense was once again steller and has now given up just four goals in
the last seven games, including no goals in conference games.

"They've made a comfortable adjustment to what we are trying to do," Recker
said. The players who are becoming more of marking backs are starting to be
more aggressive."

Recker especially had praise for Bolen

"Bolen is by far one of the best in our league. She can turn a ball in the
defense back into an attack with one kick."

Calvin outshot Aquinas 19 to 13 and goalkeepers Alyssa Bergsma and Kayal Sulzer
again split halves in the net, each collecting four saves. Bergsma allowed the
lone goal.

The Knights advance to 8-3-1 on the season with the non conference victory.
Calvin is 3-0-0 and in first place in the MIAA.

"Obviously our conference games mean more to me," Recker said. "But I think
it's a sense of integrity of performance that you want from you players that no
game is a low key game, you want that sense of pride in the outcome and this is
a team that is starting to want that."

MEN’S SOCCER
Calvin 6, Adrian 1

A year ago, Calvin’s first trip to Adrian’s brand new Performance Stadium
resulted in a 2-2 double-overtime tie. Calvin’s second trip to the
multi-million dollar facility proved more fruitful as the Knights scored a 6-1
victory over the host Bulldogs Saturday afternoon.

Since opening the year with a 1-3-1 record, Calvin (7-4-1 overall) has won six
of its last seven games including its last five. More importantly, the Knights
remain tied for first place in the MIAA standings with Kalamazoo at 5-1-0 in
league play.

Calvin scored four times in the first half with freshman Scott Hooker (Unity
Christian HS) getting the Knights on the board just 17 seconds into the match
on a feed from junior Dan VanSlyke (Grove City, PA). Senior Nick Capisciolto
(Unity Christian HS), freshman Kurt VanSickel (Pittsburgh, PA) and freshman
Jeff Grater (Stow, OH) followed with first half goals. Adrian came back with an
goal early in the second half but the Knights responded with goals by senior
Jared Litty (Hudsonville HS) and Capisciolto to close out the scoring.

Junior Anthony Gratson (Rochester Stoney Creek HS) picked up a pair of assists
for the Knights while junior A.J. Dufendach (Forest Hills VanSlyke and sophomore Luke Holtrop (Unity Christian HS) also were credited
with an assist on the afternoon.

Calvin returns to action on Tuesday when it hosts Tri-State at 4:00 p.m. The
game will be aired via RealAudio through the Calvin web site at:
