MEN'S SOCCER

ADA, OH -- Calvin dropped the opener of the OAC/MIAA Shootout on Friday, falling to host Ohio Northern 2-0. Calvin (1-3-1) outshot the host Polar Bears 27-15 overall including a 16-8 advantage in the second half but the Polar Bears (4-3-0) were able to score single goals in each half. Trailing 1-0, Calvin nearly tied the game early in the second half on a breakaway by senior Jared Litty (Hudsonville HS) but Litty's shot attempt to the corner was deflected just wide of the goal by a leaping save by the Ohio Northern goalkeeper.

Ohio Northern then put the game away with a goal in the 71st minute of play.

Junior Luke Panacassio (Sydney, Australia) received his first start in goal for the Knights and collected four saves.

Calvin is back in action on Saturday at 12:30 when it takes on Baldwin-Wallace. Hope defeated Baldwin-Wallace 3-2 in Friday's other first round game. Saturday's Calvin/Baldwin-Wallace will feature a meeting of brothers as Calvin freshman Jeff Grater (Stow, OH) will go head-to-head against older brother Michael Grater who is a junior for Baldwin-Wallace.
