CALVIN MEN'S SOCCER TEAM PREPARING FOR TRIP TO COSTA RICA

A group of Calvin men's soccer players and coaches will depart this weekend
for a week-long trip to Costa Rica.

A traveling group of 21 student-athletes and two coaches will make up the
Calvin contingent scheduled to be in the Costa Rican capitol city of San Jose'.

While on the trip, the Calvin contingent will be involved in four soccer
matches with local club teams. The trip will also involve local mission work
including a service project at an orphanage and an afternoon serving meals at a
homeless shelter.

“We’re scheduled for three afternoons of mission work while there,” said
Hughes. “The trip will be a great opportunity for our players to understand
how they can be servants in God’s world which exemplifies the mission of
Calvin College.”

Hughes is also excited about the cultural experience that his players will
receive. "This trip will be a wonderful cultural experience for the players -
one that I am sure they will never forget," said Hughes. "Some of the players
on the trip are also Spanish majors at Calvin so I know this trip will be
particularly poignant for them."

Hughes and Calvin men's soccer assistant coach Don Buccholz will make up the
coaching staff on the trip. Calvin players making the trip include: seniors
Dave Fortosis (West Chicago, IL/Wheaton Academy) and Jared Litty
(Hudsonville/Hudsonville HS), juniors A.J. Dufendach (Grand Rapids/Forest Hills
Northern HS), Ben Buehrle (Wyoming/Tri-unity Christian HS), Darrin Cline
(Grandville/Grandville HS), Zac DiPaolo (Silver Lake, OH/Cuyahoga Valley
Christian Academy), Matt Gardner (Worthington, OH/Thomas Worthington HS),
Anthony Gratson (Rochester/Rochester Stoney Creek HS), Steve Holwerda (Grand
Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS), Dan VanSlyke (Grove City, PA/Grove City HS),
Matt Scott (Kentwood/Grand Rapids Christian HS) and Michael Holwerda (Grand
Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS); sophomores Luke Holtrop (Hudsonville/Unity
Christian HS), Tim Kertland (Harrisburg, PA/Harrisburg Christian HS), Alex
McKenzie (Lindenhurst, IL/Antioch HS), David Sandberg (Ada/Northpointe
Christian HS), Blake VanWylen (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS), Greg
Snapper (Madison, WI/Madison West HS), Chad Morrow (Ada/Forest Hills Central
HS), Luke Medema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) and Luke Otten
(Sheboygan, WI/Sheboygan County Christian HS).

A group representing the Calvin women's soccer team will also be traveling
through Costa Rica that same week along with head coach Mark Recker. A recap of
the women's trip will be sent out later in August.
