Jim Deters Update

CALVIN-HOPE MEN'S BASKETBALL RIVALRY FEATURED BY ESPN

The storied Calvin-Hope men's basketball rivalry has again been featured by ESPN. This time the college section of the ESPN web site ESPNU.com has put together a feature story on the rivalry. The feature story written by ESPNU.com editor Lauren Reynolds can be found on-line at: http://sports.espn.go.com/ncaa/news/story?id=2948245

The story is part of a series of collegiate sports rivalry sports by the web site with the Williams-Amherst football rivalry and Maine-New Hampshire ice hockey rivalry also recently featured.

Just two years ago, ESPN ranked the Calvin-Hope men's basketball rivalry as the fourth greatest college basketball rivalry, listed after Division I battles such as Duke-North Carolina (#1); Connecticut-Tennessee women (#2); and Louisville-Kentucky (#3). The sports channel filmed a segment of their "Greatest Rivalries" feature at the February, 2005 Calvin-Hope game.

The Calvin-Hope men's basketball rivalry spans more than 80 years and sees the rivalry now tied 83-83. This past year, the two teams met five times with Hope winning three of the five meetings. Both of Calvin's victories came at Hope's DeVos Fieldhouse. In fact, Calvin's 77-71 win at Hope on February 7, was the first victory by a visiting opponent over the Hope men's basketball team at the two-year old facility.

The two rivals are scheduled to meet during the upcoming 2007-08 season on January 26 at Calvin and on February 20 at Hope.

JIM DETERS UPDATE

2005 Calvin College graduate Jim Deters continues to perform well for the Kinston Indians. A high Class A affiliate of the Cleveland Indians located in Kinston, North Carolina, Deters is currently 6-3 on the year with a 2.43 earned run average. A right-handed pitcher, Deters has pitched in middle relief and as a starter this year for Kinston.

In a July 20 game against the Frederick Keys, Deters tossed three shutout innings of relief in helping Kinston gain a 7-5 victory. Deters struck out five batters, walked one and did not allow a hit in the relief appearance as he was credited with his third "hold" of the season.

This past Tuesday night, Deters received the start against the Potomac Nationals and went five innings, allowing just one run and three hits. Deters left the game with a 3-1 lead but was forced to settle for a no-decision as Potomac touched up the Kinston bullpen for three late runs to gain a 4-3 victory.

On the year, Deters has appeared in 26 games and started in three. He has logged 70.1 innings of work and allowed 73 hits. A graduate of Kalamazoo Christian High School, Deters has also struck out 41 batters and walked just 12.

In addition to his 6-3 record, Deters also has one save to his credit.
Earlier this year, Deters pitched in the Carolina-California League All-Star game and struck out the only batter he faced. He was also brought up to the Triple A Buffalo Bison for one game earlier this year as an emergency starter.

A member of the Carolina League, Kinston is currently 63-36 overall this year. Kinston is in first place of the Southern Division in the Carolina League standings through the second half of the season with an 18-12 record.

Kinston won the first half of the (Southern Division) Carolina League season with a 45-24 record and has already qualified for the post-season playoffs. The Kinston Indians are the defending Carolina League champions.
