Calvin Track and Field Teams Receive Academic Honors From USTFCCCA;
Jim Deters Update

CALVIN TRACK TEAMS RECEIVE MORE ACADEMIC HONORS

The Calvin men's and women's track and field teams have again achieved
academic and athletic excellence.

For the seventh straight year, the Calvin women’s track and field team has
received the all-academic team award from the United States Track and Field and
Cross Country Coaches Association (USTCA). In addition, the Calvin men's track
and field team has also achieved the honor.

Teams were eligible for the for honor if they had a minimum of 14 members who
participated in the 2007 outdoor season and recorded a minimum 3.00 (4.00
scale) cumulative grade point average as a group. The Calvin women's track and
field team posted a 3.456 cumulative grade point average while the men's team
posted a 3.136 cumulative grade point average. Both teams were coached by Dr.
Jong-il Kim.

In addition, nine members of the Calvin women's track and field team have
received individual all-academic accolades from the USTCA. To qualify
individually, a student-athlete needed to have recorded a minimum cumulative
grade point average of 3.25 and participated in the NCAA III Outdoor Track and
Field Championships or met an NCAA III provisional or automatic qualifying
standard.

Calvin individuals that earned the award include seniors Katie Bolt (Grand
Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS), Lisa Winkle (Grand Rapids/South Christian
HS), Lydia Singer(Wilmington, DE/Hillcrest Academy), Lauren Colyn (Battle
Creek/Kalamazoo Christian HS) and Kristen Kalb (Stow, OH/Stow Munroe Falls HS);
junior Sarah Wittingen (East Grand Rapids/East Grand Rapids HS), sophomore
Calah Schlabach (St. Michaels, AZ/St. Michaels) and freshmen Heather Koning
(Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian HS) and Jourdan Johnson (Dales Ferry, CT/The
Nedyard School).

Six of the nine individuals also picked up All-America accolades at the NCAA
III Track and Field Championships with Bolt doing so in the high jump (4th
place), Winkle in the 400 meters (5th place), long jump (8th place) and in the
4x400 meter relay (4th place), Colyn in the high jump (3rd place), Wittingen in
the 100 meter hurdles (6th place), 400 meter hurdles (2nd place) and in the
4x400 meter relay and Johnson and Koning as members of Calvin's 4x400 meter
relay team.

The Calvin women's track and field team took second at the NCAA III
Championships with a team score of 44.5 points.

JIM DETERS UPDATE

2005 Calvin College graduate Jim Deters continues to find success with the
Kinston Indians - a high Class A affiliate of the Cleveland Indians.

Heading into a Wednesday night contest with the Salem Avalanche, Deters is 6-3
on the year with a 2.24 earned run average. In his most recent appearance - a
July 2 encounter with the Wilmington Blue Rocks - Deters threw 4.1 innings of
shutout relief, allowing just one hit, striking out two and walking none.
Deters also picked up a victory in relief back on June 24 against Salem,
tossing 4.1 innings of shutout relief.

On the year, Deters has logged 56.1 innings of work with Kinston, striking out
30 batters and walking only nine while compiling a solid WHIP (walks and hits
by innings pitched) of 1.21.

Earlier this summer, Deters was a member of the Carolina League All-Star team
and struck out the only batter he faced in the Carolina/California League
All-Star game.

Kinston captured the southern division title during the first half of the
Carolina League schedule, compiling a 45-24 record. Kinston is again atop the
southern division standings during the second half with a 10-6 mark.
