ANGOLA, IN—Nearing the end of its season, the men's baseball team (13-22,
13-13 MIAA) played one of two consecutive conference double-headers against
Tri-State University (14-24, 11-15 MIAA) on Friday, with the other scheduled
for next Tuesday at Calvin.

The Knights wasted no time in game one, scoring two runs off of four hits and
one error in the top of the first inning. All four hits were two-out singles,
coming from junior Alex Marcus (Willmar, MN/Willmar Sr), freshman Matt Schepel
(Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian), junior Kyle Fletcher (Fort Wayne,
IN/Concordia Lutheran), and sophomore Chris Blacklidge (Comstock Park/Comstock
Park).

With the Tri-State bats silent, Calvin extended its lead to 4-0 with one run
in the fifth and one run in the sixth. Sophomore Jacob Vriesman (Denver,
CO/Denver Christian), who started off Calvin’s half of the fifth with a
single, scored on a single by Schepel. In the sixth, senior Eric Boer (Grand
Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian) reached on a single and scored on a sacrifice
bunt by Vriesman.

In the top of the seventh, Calvin sealed the win with three runs off of two
hits and one error. Marcus began the inning with a double to left field and
was driven in by a double from Fletcher, who went 3-for-3 in the game. Two
walks filled the bases and Fletcher and Boer scored on a wild pitch and an
error.

Senior pitcher Andy Draayer (Denver, CO/Denver Christian) upped his season
record to 4-3 and allowed only five hits while striking out eight batters and
walking none.

Calvin managed only one hit in game two, a single by Fletcher in the second
inning. Tri-State, however, had eight hits that produced seven runs. The
Thunder scored three runs in the second inning and four runs off of six hits in
the third inning. The losing pitcher for Calvin was sophomore Nate Pocock
(Wayland, MA/Wayland), who is 2-5 on the season.

Calvin hosts a double-header against Tri-State in its last game of the season
on Tuesday, May 8 at 2:00 p.m.

MEN'S TENNIS
Washington University 6, Calvin 2

KALAMAZOO, MI—The Knights' first NCAA Division III Tennis Tournament
appearance since 1996 came to a close this afternoon with a 6-2 loss to
Washington University (19-4), who was the top seed in the five team regional
and is ranked ninth in the nation. Calvin (18-6) was taking part in the
Central Regional held at Kalamazoo College and advanced to the "Round of 16"
with Friday’s 9-0 win over Ohio Northern. Having won earlier to day over
Kenyon, Kalamazoo will face Washington University tomorrow in the Regional
Finals match, with the winner advancing to National Quarterfinals.

Calvin senior Rafael Siebenschein (Wuerenlos, Switzerland/Lynden Christian)
won at third singles and after teaming up with junior Mike Goorhouse
(Holland/Holland Christian) to gain Calvin’s other point with a win at second
doubles. "Rafael is a senior and knew it was possibly his last match. He
played some really solid tennis," head coach John Ross said. "Overall, we
showed a lot of character and heart out there. We gave them a battle," Ross
said.

"Reaching the national tournament was one of our goals," Ross said. "I think
we had a great year. We would’ve liked to beat Kalamazoo in one of our two
matches, but overall we’ve come a long way in the last four years."

With 18 wins, some coming against tough regionally-ranked teams, this
season’s team had the most wins of any men's tennis team in Calvin
history. "Our schedule was about as tough as we could have," Ross said. "We
want to take this momentum and keep the program moving and look to do so with
some solid recruits coming in next year."
