Men's Tennis Advances in NCAA III Tournament;
Baseball Splits With Tri-State

MEN'S TENNIS
Calvin 9, Ohio Northern 0

KALAMAZOO -- Calvin's first appearance in the NCAA III Tournament in 11 years
proved to be a successful one as the Knights defeated Ohio Northern University
9-0 in a first round match Friday afternoon at Kalamazoo College. Calvin now
advances to the Round of 32 and will face Washington University of St. Louis
(18-4) in a second round NCAA III Tournament match on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.

After showing some nerves early on, Calvin settled in and took control of the
match. Picking up wins for Calvin in singles action were junior Ricky Tilton
(Gap, PA) at No. 1 singles, sophomore Marcus Zeiltra (Oak Brook, IL) at No. 2
singles, senior Rafael Siebenschein (Lynden, WA) at No. 3 singles, sophomore
Steve DeMaagd (Calvin Christian HS) at No. 4 singles, junior Mike Goorhouse
(Holland Christian HS) at No. 5 singles and senior Dan Volkema (Holland
Christian HS) at No. 6 singles.

In doubles play, Tilton and Zeilstra teamed up for a win at No. 1 doubles
while Goorhouse and Siebenschein were winners at No. 2 doubles and senior David
Sneller (Sheboygan, WI) and Volkema were winners at No. 3 doubles.

"Our guys were very excited today - maybe event a little too excited," said
Calvin men's tennis coach John Ross. "I thought our guys played a little
nervous at first, knowing that this was our first tournament appearance in a
long time. Once they got beyond that thought, they really settled in, played
well and had some fun."

ANGOLA, IN -- Calvin split a doubleheader with Tri-State Friday afternoon,
winning the opener 7-0 and losing 7-0 in game two. Complete game details were
not available as results were not provided by Tri-State Friday evening. A full
report will be sent out on Saturday. Calvin (13-22, 13-13 MIAA) is in fifth
place in the MIAA standings and needs one more win against Tri-State to remain
alone in fifth place in the final league standings.
