KALAMAZOO – A season interrupted by weather postponements reached an
appropriate close for the Calvin softball team on Tuesday as the Knights split
a conference doubleheader with Adrian, winning 4-2 in game one and falling 9-1
in game two. Tuesday’s twinbill was originally scheduled to be played at
Calvin but was moved south to Kalamazoo College because of soaking rains in the
Grand Rapids area that made Calvin’s field unplayable.

Playing on a neutral field, Calvin grabbed the win in the opener behind the
clutch hitting of junior Ruth Diemer (McBain Christian HS) who went 3-for-3 at
the plate with a pair of runs batted in. Diemer gave Calvin a 2-0 lead on a
two-out RBI single in the top of the first. Diemer then scored Calvin’s third
run as she singled in the fourth and scored on a double by junior Sam Ehlert
(Rockford HS). Ehlert later scored on a passed ball to give the Knights a 4-0
lead.

Adrian (16-14 overall, 5-11 MIAA) came back with two runs in the sixth inning
on a two-run homer by Meghan Lohr but the Bulldogs were retired in side in the
top of the seventh as the Knights (11-19 overall, 7-9 MIAA) held on for the
win.

Calvin junior Cori VanKoevering (Unity Christian HS) also had two hits for
Calvin in the win while freshman Leah VanEnk (Kalamazoo Christian HS) collected
the win to up her season record to 9-11 on the year. Sophomore Kristin Folkerts
(Grand Rapids Christian HS) was credited with the save in relief of VanEnk.

In game two, Adrian broke loose for six runs in the bottom of the fourth
inning to build a 9-0 lead. Calvin scratched across a run in the top of the
fifth on a wild pitch that scored sophomore Loren Scarbrough (Antioch, IL) who
had reached base on a lead-off walk. Calvin was unable to score again however,
ending the game at 9-1 because of the eight-run mercy rule.

Folkerts took the loss for Calvin to dip to 2-8 on the year. Calvin had four
hits in defeat including two by VanKoevering. At 7-9 in conference play, Calvin
will finish sixth in the final MIAA standings.

ALLENDALE, MI--The Knights faced non-conference opponent Grand Valley State
University (35-5) in an away game this afternoon. Though Calvin (12-21)
managed seven hits throughout the game, only four less than Grand Valley, the
Knights were unable to score and lost the contest 9-0.

Ranked 11th in NCAA Division II baseball, Grand Valley State began scoring in
the bottom of the second inning, driving in three runs off of two singles, a
walk, and a passed ball. Grand Valley threatened again in the fourth inning
with two men on base with zero outs, but the Calvin defense gloved two fly
balls to get out of the potential scoring situation.

In the top of the fifth, Calvin strung together two singles but did not
capitalize on the situation and left two on base.

Grand Valley increase its lead to 6-0 with three runs in the bottom of the
seventh inning. The lead off batter reached on a bunt, advanced to second on a
throwing error, and was batted in by a single. Two more batters reached on
Calvin errors and were also batted in by singles. Grand Valley then sealed the
win with a three more runs in its half of the eighth inning. A walk, a double,
and two singles accounted for the runs before Calvin ended the inning with a
double-play.

Aside from a single in the top of the ninth, Calvin was silent at its final
at-bat. Freshmen Tim Jelsema (Grandville/Calvin Christian) went 2-for-2 from
the plate with singles in the sixth and eighth innings.

The losing pitcher for Calvin was freshman Chad Epker (Winthrop Harbor,
IL/Zion-Benton). Grand Valley's Snyder struck out 13 of 23 Calvin batters he
faced in six innings.

Calvin is scheduled to travel to Tri-State on Friday, May 4 for a conference
double header and then will host Tri-State on Tuesday, May 8 at 2:00 p.m.
