Men's and Women's Track and Field At Grand Rapids Open;
Women's Tennis Falls Twice at Wheaton's Jack Swartz Invitational;
Men's Golf Fifth at Manchester Spartan Invitational
MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
The Calvin men's and women's track and field teams gathered at Houseman Field
on Saturday to compete against several West Michigan colleges and universities.
Both Calvin teams recorded a handful of notable performances.
Making the biggest noise for the Calvin women's team was senior Megann
VanderVliet (Oakville, ON) in the discus as she took first place with a strong
NCAA III provisional qualifying mark of 151-1. The throw puts VanderVliet in
first place on the national qualifying list and second on the all-time Calvin
women's discus performance list. VanderVliet was part of a strong contingent of
Calvin throwers on Saturday as freshman Leigha Oberle (Grand Rapids Christian
HS) was fifth (121-4), junior Rachel VanderWiele (Holland Christian HS) eighth
with a career-best throw of 119-0 and sophomore Annika Krygsman (Northbridge,
MA) ninth with a career-best throw of 113-1 1/2.
VanderVliet later took third place in the shot put (41-1 1/2) while sophomore
Ashley Glover (Northview HS) was eighth (36-5 1/2). In the javelin, Calvin
senior Kristen Kalb (Stow, OH) led a 1-3-5 Calvin finish as she took first
place with a toss of 115-7 while Krygsman was third (98-8) and VanderWiele
fifth (87-4).
The field events were a strength for the Calvin women's team as senior Lauren
Colyn (Kalamazoo Christian HS) took first place in the high jump with a strong
NCAA III provisional qualifying mark of 5-7 that places her in first place on
the national qualifying list. Calvin senior Katie Bolt (Grand Rapids Christian
HS) was close behind, taking second place with an NCAA III provisional
qualifying mark of 5-5. Freshman Joy Leach (Charlottsville, VA)) added a third
place finish in the pole vault (10-0) while sophomore Julie Bratt (Lynden, WA)
was fifth in the long jump (15-7) and freshman Casey Herman (Libertyville, IL)
fourth in the triple jump (31-8 3/4).
In the running events, sophomore Calah Schlabach (St. Michaels, AZ) led the
Calvin distance crew, taking first place in the 3,000 meter run (10:18.74)
while freshman Elizabeth Smit (Kirkland, WA) was first in the 5,000 meters
(18:29.34). Freshman Mary Tolsma (Hawthorne, NJ) also turned in a stellar
effort in taking second place in the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:57.76.
Sophomore Lauren Bergstrom (Rochester, MN) and junior Sarah Wittingen (East
Grand Rapids HS) came up with season-best performances in wining the 800 and
400 meters respectively. Bergstrom won the 800 meters with a time of 2:16.41
while Wittingen won the 400 meters with a time of 58.62. Bergstrom and
Wittingen then teamed up with Bolt and senior Lisa Winkle (Grand Rapids South
Christian HS) to take first place in the 4x 400 meter relay with an NCAA III
provisional qualifying time of 3:53.45. Calvin's 4x100 meter relay team of
freshman Jourdan Johnson, Wittingen, senior Lisa Geelhoed (Grand Rapids
Christian HS) and Winkle added aa third place finish with a season-best time of
49.65.
On the men's side, senior Tim Finnegan (Los Alamos, NM) led a 1-2-3 Calvin
finish in the 3,000 meter run, winning with a time of 8:45.33. Taking second
for Calvin was junior Jon Gries (King of Prussia, PA) in 8:43.83 while
sophomore Jared Eliason () was third in a time of 8:59.05.
In the 800 meters, senior Todd Schuster (Denver, CO) was second in a time of
1:56.94 while junior Dan VandenAkker (South Christian HS) was third in the
1,500 meters in a time of 4:01.99.
In the 110 high hurdles, Calvin went 1-2 with junior Kelby McClelland (Mercer,
PA) winning with a time of 15.60 while freshman Nathan Musch (Ann Arbor Huron
HS) was second in a time of 15.70. Musch then took second in the 400 meter
hurdles with a time of 58.36.
In the long jump, freshman Corey Velgersdyk (Bloomington, MN) took third (20-1)
while senior Eric DeVries (Unity Christian HS) was third in the pole vault
(12-0). Velgersdyk was also second in the triple jump (40-11). Junior Ryan
Jensen (Northview HS) contributed a fifth place finish in the discus (147-6)
while Calvin's 4x400 meter relay team of sophomore Brad Stroner (Lakewood HS),
Schuster and juniors Jared Cok (Bozeman, MT) and Joel Baker (Kalamazoo
Christian HS) took third with a time of 3:22.90. Baker added a third place time
of 49.74 in the 400 meters while Cok was fifth (50.07).
Both Calvin track and field teams will now prepare to host MIAA double-dual
meets on Saturday against Alma and Adrian at noon.
WOMEN'S TENNIS
The Calvin women's tennis team dropped a pair of matches at the Jack Swartz
Invitational this weekend at Wheaton College (IL) to fall to 6-6 on the year.
On Friday night, Calvin suffered a narrow 5-4 defeat to NAIA Olivet Nazarene
University. On Saturday, Calvin fell to nationally-ranked Wheaton (IL) 9-0.
Calvin returns to action on Tuesday when it travels to Hope for a key
conference match, scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m.
MEN'S GOLF
Calvin took fifth in a seven-team field at the Manchester Spartan Invitational
this past weekend, finishing the two-day tournament with a team score of 657
strokes. Franklin College took first place with 625 strokes.
Calvin's top individual finisher was senior Jeff TenBrink (Kalamazoo Christian
HS) who had a two-day total of 160 strokes (80-80) that left him in a tie for
ninth place. Freshman Kyle Harvey (Willard, OH) was 16th (163 strokes) while
freshman Aaron Hargett (Lake Odessa-Lakewood HS) was 20th (165 strokes),
sophomore Brad Tindall (Vicksburg HS) 24th (169 strokes) and freshman Rob Dice
(Grosse Pointe) 36th (193 strokes).
Spencer Batt of Huntington College took medalist honors with a two-day total of
149 strokes (78-71).
