CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR THURSDAY, MARCH 29, 2007

Baseball Sweeps DH against Alma
Men’s Tennis Falls to Lakers

BASEBALL

ALMA – The Calvin baseball team beat Alma twice Thursday to extend a modest
winning streak to four games. The victories improved Calvin’s record to 5-9
on the season and, more importantly, to 5-1 in the MIAA. Calvin is now tied
with Adrian atop the league standings heading into the weekend.

In game one, Calvin used a strong itching performance by senior Andy Draayer
(Denver, CO) to record a 5-1 victory. Draayer pitched a complete game while
allowing only the one earned run on four hits, striking out three batters. The
win was Draayer’s second in a row to even his record at 2-2 for the season.

The Knights struck early in game one, scoring two runs in the first inning on
a single by junior Alex Marcus (Wilmar, MN) and a fielder’s choice by
sophomore Chris Blacklidge (Comstock Park). The Scots scored their lone run in
the second and Calvin rallied again in the third, scoring three more runs.
Freshman Matt Schepel (GR Christian) doubled in Marcus and sophomore Jacob
Vriesman (Denver, CO) and then scored on a single by junior Kevin Fletcher
(Fort Wayne, IN). That would be all the Knight offense would need as Draayer
finished without allowing another run.

Marcus finished the game with three hits, two runs scored, and a run batted in
while Vriesman and Schepel each collected a pair of hits.

Game two had Calvin taking the lead early also. The Knights scored in the
second inning when Vriesman singled in senior Eric Boer (GR Christian) to give
Calvin a 1-0 lead. Calvin added three runs in the fifth inning when Blacklidge
singled in a run and later scored on an error. Boer also knocked in a run in
the inning when he grounded out to shortstop. Calvin added one more run in the
seventh by way of a home run by Fletcher, his first of the season, and the
first ever home run at Klenk Park, the home of the Scots.

Sophomore Kyle Cousins (Holland Christian) picked up the victory on the mound
for Calvin, his first of the season. Cousins (1-3) went the distance, allowing
three earned runs on eight hits while striking out four batters.

Calvin returns to action on Saturday to finish the series with Alma. A
double-header is slated to begin at the Calvin field at 1 p.m. The game will
be broadcast over the Calvin Sports Information Website via real audio.

MEN'S TENNIS

Grand Valley 6, Calvin 3

GRAND RAPIDS--After a successful spring break trip last week, the men's tennis
team opened up its home season with a non-conference match-up against Grand
Valley State University (11-4). Though five of the singles matches went into a
third set, Calvin (5-2) was unable to seal a victory, falling to GVSU with an
overall final 6-3 score.

According to Head Coach John Ross, Calvin suffered defeat because of a lack of
energy. "We played really well over the spring break trip because we came out
with a ton of energy, and that's what we didn't have today. We also missed
having Dan Volkema in third doubles and number six singles, but we have other
guys who can step up."

The Knights continue play at home on Saturday when they host
conference-opponent Albion at 1:00 p.m.
