Softball Swept at Cornerstone

GRAND RAPIDS -- Calvin dropped both ends of a non-conference doubleheader at
Cornerstone Tuesday afternoon, falling 3-0 and 5-3. The Knights are now 4-8 on
the season.

In game one, Calvin managed just five hits against Cornerstone pitcher Leah
Gruppen. Cornerstone (7-9) scored single runs in the first, fifth and sixth
innings. Freshman Leah VanEnk (Kalamazoo Christian HS) took the loss for
Calvin, striking out three and walking two while allowing only six hits.
Sophomore Brittany Moriarity (Muskegon Mona Shores HS) collected two of
Calvin's five hits in defeat.

In game two, Calvin jumped out to a 2-0 lead behind an RBI double by sophomore
Amy Tiejema (Grand Rapids Christian HS) and an RBI single by junior Ruth Diemer
(McBain Northern Michigan Christian HS) in the second inning. Cornerstone came
back to tie the game 2-2 on a two-run homer by Lisa VanDerVeen in the third.
Calvin then retook the lead at 3-2 on a run-scoring double by sophomore Loren
Scarbrough (Antioch, IL) in the fourth. The host Golden Eagles took the lead
for good on a bases-loaded double by Jessica Dood in the fifth that scored
three.

In the sixth, Calvin loaded the bases with one out but the Knight rally was
extenquished on a double-play on a fly-ball to right and a putout at the plate.
Calvin was then retired in order in the seventh.

Sophomore Kristin Folkerts (Grand Rapids Christian HS) took the loss for
Calvin, striking out one and walking four in six innings of work. Calvin
finished the game with eight hits with sophomore Jackie Paauw (Calvin Christian
HS) and Scarbrough collecting two hits apiece.

Calvin now breaks until next Thursday (April 5) when it hosts Olivet in a
doubleheader slated to start at 3:30 p.m. The twinbill will serve as Calvin's
conference opener.
