TUCSON, AZ -- Calvin opened its 2007 season in winning fashion, defeating New
England College 10-1 and then topping Knox College 5-4 in dramatic fashion.
In the opener against New England College, freshman Leah VanEnk (Kalamazoo
Christian HS) put together a smashing debut, tossing a three-hit complete-game
victory while collecting a pair of hits of her own including a two-run RBI
triple. Calvin collected eight hits and reaped the benefits of seven walks by
the New England College pitching staff as the Knights shortened the game to six
innings due to the mercy-rule. Junior Cori VanKoevering (Unity Christian HS)
also belted a three-run RBI triple while senior Erin Conrad (Calvin Christian
HS) also had a double.
In the win over Knox College, sophomore Brittany Moriarity (Muskegon Mona
Shores) belted a walk-off home run in the botto mof the seventh inning to give
Calvin a scintillating 5-4 come-back win. Morriarity's homer was the final
touch on a Calvin rally that saw the Knights overcome a 4-0 deficit.
Calvin began its rally in the bottom of the fourth on RBI singles by
VanKoevering and junior Ruth Diemer (McBain Christian) to cut the deficit in
half. Calvin then tied the game on a two-out two-run RBI double by freshman
Kirstin Ashman (Kankakee, IL), setting up Moriarity's heroics in the bottom of
the seventh.
Sophomore Kristin Folkerts (Grand Rapids Christian HS) went the distance for
Calvin to pick up the win, scattering five hits while striking out five and
walking three. Calvin returns to action on Monday when it faces Manchester
College and North Central College in single games.

TUCSON, AZ -- Calvin opened its season on Saturday afternoon by dropping both
ends of a doubleheader to the University of Massachusetts at Boston. In the
opener, U-Mass-Boston rolled to a 12-0 win over the Knights and then came up
with a 5-1 win in game two.
In the opener, U-Mass Boston erupted for 10 runs in the opening three innings.
Calvin committed five errors in the game one loss with sophomore Nate Pocock
(Wayland, MA) taking the loss. Of the 12 runs scored by U-Mass Boston, only
three were earned. Calvin picked up seven hits in defeat with two coming off
the bat of freshman Matt Schepel (Grand Rapids Christian HS). Junior Brad
Brummel (South Christian HS) also had a double for the Maroon and Gold.
In game two, Calvin managed just four hits off of U-Mass Boston starter Mark
Andriano. U-Mass Boston broke a 1-1 tie with a run in the fifth and three in
the sixth. Junior Scott Larsen (Hastings HS) took the loss for Calvin as he
struck out four and walked three. Sophomore Chris Blacklidge (Comstock Park HS)
and sophomore Jason May (Chicago, IL) both had doubles for the Knights in the
loss.
Calvin returns to action on Monday when it faces the University of Chicago in a
doubleheader slated to start at 12:30 p.m. local time.
WOMEN'S TENNIS
Calvin 9, Mills College of California 0
ORLANDO, FL -- Calvin picked up its third consecutive victory and raised its
season record to 3-2 in the process, defeating Mills College of California 9-0
on Saturday. Calvin returns to action on Monday night when it faces Otterbein
College in Orlando.

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
MEMPHIS, TN -- The Calvin men's and women's track and field teams opened their
outdoor campaigns on Saturday at the Rhodes Open Invitational at Rhodes
College. In the women's competition, Calvin received big performances from
junior Christina Overbeck (Seattle, WA) and sophomore Calah Schlabach (St.
Michaels, Arizona) in the 5,000 meters with Overbeck taking first place with a
sizzling time of 17:01.68 while Schlabach was second in 17:29.57. Overbeck's
time was an NCAA III provisional qualifying time and was less than two seconds
away from an automatic qualifying effort. Schlabach's time was also an NCAA III
provisional qualifying time.
In the 400 meter hurdles, junior Sarah Wittingen (East Grand Rapids HS) took
third with an NCAA III provisional qualifying time of 1:03.69. Wittingen also
ran on Calvin's 4x400 meter relay team that just missed an NCAA III provisional
qualifying time, taking second with a time of 3:57.67. In the shot put, senior
Megann VanderVliet (Oakville, ON) took fourth with an NCAA III provisional
qualifying mark of 42-11 3/4.
On the men's side, Calvin went 1-2-3 in the 5,000 meters led by senior Tim
Finnegan (Los Alamos, NM) who was first with a time of 14:57.89. Sophomore Jed
Christiansen (Greenville, PA) also had a strong time of 3:57.83 in taking
fourth in the 1,500 meters. Junior Kelby McClelland (Mercer, PA) also added a
fourth place time of 15.96 in the 110 high hurdles while senior Todd Schuster
(Denver, CO) was second in the 800 meters with a time of 1:57.71.
Calvin's 4x400 meter relay also took first place with a time of 3:23.89. Junior
Ryan Jensen (Grand Rapids Northview HS) added a third place finish in the
hammer throw (130-1).
Both Calvin teams return to action next Saturday when they return to Rhodes
College to compete at the Rhodes Lynx Spring Invitational. Calvin will spend
next week training in Gulf Shores, Alabama.
