Calvin Basketball Teams Are NCAA III Tournament Bound;
Derek Griffin Named MIAA Player of the Week

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

The Calvin men's and women's basketball teams are both headed to the NCAA III
Tournament. The Calvin women's basketball team received an at-large bid to the
tournament on Sunday night while the Calvin men's basketball team had already
clinched an automatic bid by winning the MIAA Tournament title last Saturday
night.

The Calvin women's basketball team will be making its 11th appearance in the
NCAA III Tournament including its third straight. The Knights are also making
their third appearance under current head coach John Ross. The Calvin women's
basketball team is 11-10 in 10 prior trips to the NCAA III Tournament.

The Calvin men's basketball team will be making its 17th appearance in the NCAA
III Tournament including its fourth straight. Calvin will also be making its
sixth appearance in the NCAA III Tournament under current head coach Kevin
Vande Streek. Calvin is 29-17 in 16 prior trips to the NCAA III Tournament.

The MIAA will be sending two men's and two women's teams to the NCAA III
Tournament as the Hope men received an at-large bid on Sunday night while its
women's team had already clinched an automatic bid by winning the MIAA
Tournament title on Saturday afternoon.

Brackets and pairings for the men's and women's NCAA III Tournaments are
scheduled to be released on Monday morning on the NCAA web site at:

DEREK GRIFFIN NAMED MIAA PLAYER OF THE WEEK IN MEN'S BASKETBALL

For the second time this year, Calvin College junior Derek Griffin has been
named MIAA Player of the Week in men's basketball.

A native of Whitehall and a graduate of Whitehall High School, Griffin averaged
16.7 points and 6.7 rebounds a game during the MIAA Tournament last week as the
Knights captured the tournament crown for the third time in the last four
years. In a semifinal win over Tri-State Friday night, Griffin scored 21
points. He followed with 24 points in a 78-76 win over Hope in the championship
game Saturday night including the game-winning basket with four seconds
remaining.

For the week, Griffin shot 54.5 percent (18-of-33) from the field and 47.4
percent (9-of-19) from three-point range. He was also 5-for-5 at the free throw
line during the tournament.
