MIAA Men's Basketball Tournament Pairings Set;
Men's Tennis Takes Second at West Michigan Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament
Women's Tennis Falls In Season Opener to Nationally-Ranked Carthage;
Track and Field Teams Post Strong Efforts at Grand Rapids Open

MEN'S BASKETBALL

The Calvin men's basketball team will host Olivet on Wednesday night in a first round MIAA Tournament game at the Calvin Fieldhouse. Wednesday's game is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. Calvin (15-9) will enter the game as the tournament's second seed while Olivet (5-19) will enter as the tournament's seventh seed. Other first round games have top-seeded Hope (21-3) hosting eighth-seeded Alma (3-21) while third-seeded Tri-State (15-9) will host sixth-seeded Kalamazoo (5-18) while fourth-seeded Adrian (9-16) will host fifth-seeded Albion (10-14).

The following are the complete MIAA Tournament pairings for men's basketball:

#8 Alma (3-21) at #1 Hope (21-3), 7:30 p.m.
#7 Olivet (5-19) at #2 Calvin (15-9), 7:30 p.m.

FRIDAY- Semi-finals at highest seed

SATURDAY- Championship game at Friday site
Championship game, 7:30 p.m.

The following is ticket information for first round MIAA Tournament basketball games for the Calvin men's and women's teams.

Women's Game:

Tuesday, Feb. 20 at Calvin at 7:30pm - doors open at 6:30pm.

General Admission tickets for Tuesday’s game will be on sale at the Box Office on Monday and Tuesday, February 19 & 20 from 9:00am until 5:00pm. Tickets will also be sold at the Fieldhouse starting at 6:30pm on Tuesday. MIAA Students may enter free with their ID's.

Men's Game:
Wednesday, Feb. 21 at Calvin at 7:30pm - doors open at 6:30pm.

MEN'S TENNIS

Calvin opened its 2007 campaign in strong fashion, finishing second at the West Michigan Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament with a team score of 16 pionts. Aquinas was first with 20 points while Hope was third with 10 points and Grand Rapids Community College fourth with two points.

In singles play, Calvin captured a pair of individual titles with senior Rafael Siebenschein (Lynden, WA) winning at No. 3 singles with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Jordan O'Neill of Aquinas while senior David Sneller (Sheboygan, WI) won at No. 7 singles with a 7-6, 3-6, 10-7 win over Dan Doernfeld of Aquinas. Junior Ricky Tilton (Lancaster, PA) was also the runner-up at No. 1 singles while sophomore Steve DeMaagd (Calvin Christian HS) was the runner-up at No. 4 singles.

In doubles play, Calvin took home titles at No. 3 and No. 4 doubles. Senior Dan Volkema (Holland Christian HS) and Sneller were victorious over Hope's tandem of Gardner and Vredenberg 6-2, 6-7, 10-3 while DeMaagd and sophomore Andrew Rescorla (Zionsville, IN) picked up a 4-6, 6-4, 13-11 win over the Aquinas tandem of Ludwig and Doernfeld.

Calvin returns to action on March 14 when it hosts Aquinas at 3 p.m.

WOMEN'S TENNIS

Calvin opened its 2007 season with a 9-0 loss to 25th-ranked Carthage College Friday night. Calvin returns to action on February 28 when it faces Grand Valley State at 8:00 p.m.

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD

ALLENDALE -- The Calvin men's and women's track and field teams had a number of strong performances at the Grand Rapids (Indoor) Open hosted by Grand Valley State Friday night.

In the women's competition, Calvin picked up three victories as its 4x400 meter relay team took first with a time of 4:00.09 while sophomore Julie Bratt (Lynden, WA) won the triple jump (34-2) and junior Christina Overbeck (Seattle, WA) won the 3,000 meters (10:14.01). Overbeck led a 1-2-3-4 Calvin finish in the 3K as sophomore Calah Schlabach (St. Michaels, AZ) was second (10:36.47), senior Lydia Singer (Wilmington, DE) third (10:52.51) and sophomore Jessi Hale (Rehoboth, NM) fourth (10:52.61).

Other highlights for the Calvin women included junior Lynn Marsh (North Vernon, IN) taking third in the 5,000 meters (19:50.23), junior Sarah Wittingen (East Grand Rapids HS) taking fourth in the 55-meter hurdles (8.79), senior Katie Bolt (Grand Rapids Christian HS) taking second in the high jump (5-5), Bratt taking fourth in the long jump (16-3 3/4) and senior Megann VanderVliet (Oakville, ON) taking second in the shopt put (40-2 3/4). Sophomore Ashley Glover (Northview HS) was also third in the shot put (36-7 1/2) and junior Brooke Baechler (White Pigeon HS) fifth in the shopt put (33-5 1/4). VanderVliet also took fourth in the weight throw (40-0 1/2) while Glover was fifth (39-8 1/2).

On the men's side, sophomore Jed Christiansen (Greenville, PA) took first place honors in the one-mile run (4:12.17) while junior Tad Hulst (Zeeland HS) was second in the 3,000 meters (8:45.30). Sophomore Sawyer Koops (Dolores, CO) was also seventh in the 3K (9:26.34).

In the 800 meters, senior Todd Schuster (Denver, CO) was third (1:54.20) while senior Tim Finnegan (Los Alamos, NM) was third in the 5,000 meters (15:10.82). In addition, junior Kelby McClelland (Mercer, PA) was fourth in the 55-meter hurdles (8:14) while freshman Jonathon DeRuiter (Bellingham, WA) was fourth in the triple jump (41-1). In the weight throw, junior Ryan Jensen (Northview HS) was sixth (53-0 3/4).

Both teams will now prepare for the Rhodes Invitational on March 17 in Memphis, Tennessee.
