Lisa Winkle Named to ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District IV First Team in
Women's Basketball;
Track and Field Teams Open Indoor Campaigns at Grand Rapids Open at Grand
Valley State

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

For the third consecutive year, Calvin College senior Lisa Winkle has been
named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District IV first team in women's
basketball. A native of Grand Rapids and a graduate of South Christian High
School, Winkle is now eligible for Academic All-America consideration.

A 6-0 senior center, Winkle carries a 3.96 grade point average while majoring
in mathematics and secondary education. On the court, she is averaging 13.6
points and 9.6 rebounds a game. She is also ranked fifth nationally in field
goal percentage (.600). She has also blocked 37 shots this year and has an
assist-to-turnover ratio of 1.5-to-1.

The Calvin women's basketball team is currently 20-1 overall and ranked second
in one national poll and third in another. The Knights will host rival Hope on
Saturday at 12:45 p.m. at the Calvin Fieldhouse. A RealAudio broadcast of the

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD

ALLENDALE -- The Calvin men's and women's track and field teams opened up their
indoor campaigns on Friday night at the Grand Rapids Open, hosted by Grand
Valley State University.

In the women's competition, junior Sarah Wittengen (East Grand Rapids HS) took
fifth in the 55 meter dash (7.68) and second in the 55-meter hurdles (8.63). In
the 800 meters, sophomore Lauren Bergstrom (Century, MN) picked up an exciting
win, taking first place with a time of 2:19.62, edging a competitor by
four-hundreths of a second. Another winner for Calvin was sophomore Calah
Schlabach (St. Michaels, Arizona) in the 3,000 meters (10:25.00). Freshman Liz
Smit (Kirkland, WA) was second (10:40.00) and sophomore Jessie Hale (Rehoboth,
NM) third (11:09.00). In the 5,000 meters, junior Christina Overbeck (Bellevue,
WA) was second (17:43.46).

In the women's high jump, senior Lauren Colyn (Kalamazoo Christian HS) had a
big night, taking second place with a jump of 5-5 while senior Katie Bolt
(Grand Rapids Christian HS) was fourth (5-3). Senior Megann VanderVliet
(Oakville, ON) was fourth in the shot put (41-8 1/2).

On the men's side, junior Joel Baker (Kalamazoo Christian HS) took fourth in
the 200 meters (23.20) while junior Kelby McClelland (Mercer, PA) was third in
the 55-meter hurdles (8.07) to lead Calvin's sprinters. Calvin's distance crew
put on a powerful performance as junior Tad Hulst (Zeeland HS) won the one-mile
run (4:19.69) and sophomore Jed Christiansen (Greenville, PA) took the 3,000
meters (8:57.02). Christiansen was part of a 1-2 Calvin finish in the 3K as
junior Dan VandenAkker (South Christian HS) took second in a time of 8:57.02.
Senior Tim Finnegan (Los Alamos, NM) also took third in the one-mile run with a
time of 4:22.45. In the 5,000 meters, freshman Aaron Goodman (Milwaukee, WI)
was fourth (16:08.00) and sophomore Sawyer Koopers (Dolores, CO) sixth
(16:17.20).

Junior Ryan Jensen (Northview HS) also took fifth in the weight throw (53-7).
