CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR FEBRUARY 9, 2007 (Part One)

MIAA SWIMMING AND DIVING CHAMPIONSHIPS DAY TWO REPORT

JENISON -- The Calvin women's swimming and diving team continued its
record-breaking ways on day two of the MIAA Swimming and Diving Championships,
setting three MIAA records and four school marks in rolling out to a first
place total of 454.5points. Heading into the final day of competition, the
Knights sit 120 points ahead of second place Hope. The Calvin women's swimming
and diving team is bidding for its third straight MIAA title and its fifth
overall.

Freshman Katie White of Grand Rapids Christian High School was part of two MIAA
record performances on Friday night. In the 200 medley relay, White was part of
a Calvin quartet that clocked in with an NCAA III B' cut qualifying time of
1:48.64, breaking the previous record of 1:48.87 set by Hope in 2006. White was
joined on the relay by sophomore Jordan Scott (Oakville, ON), freshman Emily
Roberts (DeKalb, IL) and sophomore Julie Wolfe (Westerville, OH). The winning
time also broke the previous Calvin record of 1:49.12 set a year ago.

White then led a 1-2-3 Calvin finish in the 100 breaststroke with an MIAA
record and NCAA III automatic qualifying time of 1:05.17. Her time eclipsed the
previous MIAA record of 1:05.25 set by two-time national champion Betsy
VandenBerg of Hope in 2001. White was followed by Roberts in second place with
an NCAA III B' cut qualifying time of 1:06.70 while senior Barbara Gluvers
(Placerville, CA) was third in 1:08.28. Gluvers later swam an NCAA B' cut
qualifying time of 1:07.57 in a 100 breaststroke time trial later in the
evening.

Senior Becky Weima (Grand Rapids Christian HS) also had a big night, winning
the 200 freestyle for the fourth consecutive year. Weima won the event with an
NCAA III automatic qualifying time of 1:50.56. Weima was part of a 1-2-5 Calvin
finish as junior Stephanie Duncan (Long Grove, IL) took second with an NCAA III
B' cut qualifying time of 1:54.36 while sophomore Cara VanWoerkom (Calvin
Christian HS) was fifth with a time of 1:57.53

Another highlight for the Calvin women came in the 400 IM as senior Alex Wilson
(Ellsworth, OH) took second with a school record and NCAA III B' cut qualifying
time of 4:37.15, breaking the previous Calvin mark of 4:37.25 set by Abby
Johnson in 2003. The record-setting performance by Wilson came 24 hours after
she had clocked an NCAA III B' cut qualifying time of 1:05.59 in a 100
breaststroke time trial. Wilson was part of a 2-4 Calvin finish in the 400 IM
as freshman Laura Price (Warren, PA) was fourth in a time of 4:50.03.

Calvin capped off the evening by winning the 800 freestyle relay with an MIAA
record, Calvin record and NCAA III automatic qualifying time of 7:40.66,
breaking the previous record of 7:41.58 set by Calvin's 2005 team. Calvin's
winning 2007 relay team consisted of Duncan, VanWoerkom, Price and Weima.

Calvin also received top-six efforts from junior Kat Vinson (Kaneohe, HI) and
Scott in the 100 backstroke with Vinson placing third (1:00.42) and Scott
fourth (1:00.97).

"Our women's team has been on a roll from day one and they kept it going
tonight," said Gelderloos. "Katie White in particular was tremendous tonight.
The amazing thing about that swim is that she does not have a great amount of
experience in the event but still had an amazing performance."

On the men's side, Calvin fell back into fourth place with 210 points, 34.5
points behind third place Kalamazoo. Olivet leads the men's standings with 371
points, 16.5 points ahead of second place Hope. The Knights did have several
stellar efforts however with junior John Boumgarden (Naperville, IL).
Boumgarden nearly surprised the field in the 100 butterfly, making a serious
bid for the win before finishing second with a career-best and NCAA III B' cut
qualifying time of 51.11. Hope freshman Ryan Nelis won the race with a time of
50.66. Boumgarden also swam a powerful second leg on Calvin's 800 freestyle
relay team that finished second in an NCAA III B' cut qualifying time of
6:56.15. The relay also included senior Peter Tuuk (Grand Rapids Christian HS),
sophomore Keith Conrad (Wheaton, IL) and senior Andy Resseguie (Holland
Christian HS).

Tuuk and Resseguie were part of a 3-5 Calvin finish in the 200 freestyle wtih
Tuuk posting a third place time of 1:43.56 and Resseguie a fifth place time of
1:44.24. In the 100 backstroke, Calvin had a pair of top-six finishes with
junior Joe Gluvers (Rocklin, CA) taking fourth (53.67) and freshman Kurt
VanAllsburg (Grand Rapids Christian HS) taking sixth (54.55).

Finally, Calvin's 200 medley relay team of VanAllsburg, Conrad, senior Andrew
Bolles (West Ottawa HS) and Andrew Resseguie took fourth in a time of 1:38.81.

"Our men's team had a solid day," said Gelderloos. "We didn't have as many of
our top events today but we still had some great swims. John Boumgarden was
sensational. He has the heart of a lion and I'm very proud of him as I am of
all our swimmers tonight."
