Jill Capel Named First Team Division III All-American by National Soccer Coaches Association of America

Calvin College senior forward Jill Capel has been named a first team Division III All-American by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.

A native of Hudsonville and a graduate of Hudsonville Unity Christian High School, Capel was named to the NSCAA/adidas NCAA Division III All-America first team released earlier today.

Capel is just the third player in Calvin women’s soccer history to receive All-America honors from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America and is just the second to be named a first team All-American. Tara Dyk was a first team All-America selection in 1997 and a second team choice in 1998 while Amber Wiersma was a third team All-America pick in 1997.

A four-year starter at forward for Calvin, Capel recently closed out her collegiate career as Calvin’s career leader in assists (48) while also finishing second on the Calvin career list in goals (75) and points (199).

As a senior this fall, she led Calvin in scoring with 42 points on the strength of 15 goals and 12 assists. Of her 15 goals, nine were game-winners.

In addition, Capel led the MIAA in scoring this fall and was named the MIAA’s Most Valuable Player for the second straight year. She was also voted to the All-MIAA first team for a fourth straight year, becoming one of just nine players in MIAA women’s soccer history to do so.

Calvin finished the 2006 season with a 22-0-1 record, reaching the quarterfinals of the NCAA III Tournament before bowing to defending national champion Messiah (Pa.) in a penalty kick shootout after the two teams had played to a 1-1 double-overtime tie. Calvin finished the year ranked fifth nationally and led all of Division III women’s soccer in winning percentage.

In addition, Calvin captured its second straight MIAA title and established a Calvin single-season record for victories in a season.

Over the course of Capel’s four-year career at Calvin, the Knights posted a won-loss record of 64-13-6 that included a pair of MIAA titles and two trips to the NCAA III Tournament.
