Calvin 1, Alma 0 (2 OT)
ALMA -- Calvin sophomore Ben Buehrle found the perfect time to score the first
goal of his varsity career on Wednesday afternoon, scoring with just 8:27 left
in the second overtime session to lift the Knights to a dramatic 1-0
sudden-death overtime win. Buerhle's goal snapped a Calvin scoreless string of
more than 320 minutes and gave the Knights (3-3-1 overall, 1-0-0 MIAA) their
first victory since September 2.
A graduate of Wyoming Tri-unity Christian High School, Buehrle whipped in a
shot from the eight-yard line after receiving a well-placed crossing pass from
sophomore teammate Anthony Gratson (Rochester Stoney Creek HS) who received an
assist on the play.
Calvin outshot the host Scots (1-3-1 overall, 0-1-0 MIAA) 27-9 but Alma
threatened in the closing minutes of regulation, forcing Calvin junior
goalkeeper Matt Gardner (Worthington, OH) to come up with several clutch saves.
Gardner entered the game in the 71st minute of play after starting goalkeeper
Dave Fortosis (West Chicago, IL/Wheaton Academy) was forced to the sidelines
with an injury. Gardner proved up to the task, making all four of his saves in
the final 18 minutes of regulation, helping set up Buehrle's overtime
dramatics.
Alma goalkeeper James Thomson also had a strong game for the Scots, collecting
11 saves.
Calvin will now prepare to host Albion on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. Albion defeated
Hope 1-0 on Wednesday in the MIAA opener for both teams.
