Calvin Lands Four On Wittenberg Border Battle All-Tournament Team
Lauren DeGroot Named MIAA Specialty Player of the Week
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
A 3-1 record including an upset victory over eighth-ranked Wittenberg has landed four members of the Calvin women’s volleyball team on the Wittenberg Border Battle All-Tournament released this evening.
This year, the all-tournament team was split into an All-Michigan squad and an All-Ohio squad. Calvin grabbed four of the seven spots on the All-Michigan team as seniors Lorilyn Vogel (Orange City, IA), junior Molly Krikke (Greenwich, OH) and sophomores Jessica Garlick (Kalamazoo Christian HS) and Lauren DeGroot (Tulare, CA) were so honored. They were joined on the all-tournament team by Amber Hoezee and Stephanie Poll of Hope and Lindsay Eshelman of Adrian.
At the tournament, Vogel averaged 3.69 kills-per-game. Krikke averaged 3.38 kills, 1.75 blocks and 1.38 digs-per-game in playing near her hometown of Greenwich this weekend. Garlick averaged 1.67 kills, 1.22 digs and 1.11 blocks-per-game during the tournament. Calvin’s starting libero in the back row, DeGroot had a stellar all-around weekend, averaging 7.44 digs-per-game. She was also called into to replace injured setter Katie Zondervan in Saturday’s matches against Ohio Northern and Capital University. She finished the tournament with 56 assists for an average of 3.50 assists-per-game. She also came up with seven service aces during the tournament.
In addition, DeGroot has been named the MIAA’s Specialty Player of the Week for the second time in her career. DeGroot is being honored for her play in a conference victory over Alma last week in which she accumulated a match-high 30 digs. DeGroot’s effort helped Calvin defeat Alma in four games, allowing the Knights to claim a regular season conference victory at Alma for the first time since the 2000 season.
