Volleyball Finishes 3-1 at Wittenberg Border Battle Tournament;
Women’s Soccer Blanks Westminster 2-0 at Penn State-Behrend Tourney;
Men’s Soccer Shutout By Wilmington at Kiwanis Classic
Men’s Golf Fifth at MIAA Outing #3 – Remains in Fifth Place in Overall Standings

SPRINGFIELD, OH – Calvin closed out the Wittenberg Border Battle with a Saturday split, falling to 18th-ranked Ohio Northern 20-30, 31-29, 30-20, 27-30, 15-10 before coming back to defeat Capital University 30-25, 30-26, 31-29.
Calvin finished in a three-way tie for first place in the tournament with Wittenberg and Ohio Northern which all posted 3-1 records. Calvin defeated Wittenberg on Friday with Ohio Northern’s sole loss coming to Hope Friday night.
The weekend tournament matched four teams from the MIAA (Adrian, Alma, Hope and Calvin) against four Ohio opponents (Wittenberg, Denison, Capital and Ohio Northern). At the conclusion of the tournament, the two states had split the 16 matches with the MIAA schools going 5-3 on day one and the Ohio schools going 5-3 on day two for an eventual 8-8 draw.
In its loss to Ohio Northern, Calvin (10-1) was forced to overcome the loss of starting setter Katie Zondervan (Lakewood, CA) to an injury midway through the match. Despite the loss, Calvin battled valiantly to the end before falling just short. Before bowing out of the match, Zondervan collected 38 assists and nine digs. Sophomore Lauren DeGroot (Tulare, CA) also had 17 assists and 32 digs. Senior Kristen Kalb (Stow, OH) came up with 21 kills and 25 digs while senior Lorilyn Vogel (Orange City, IA) had 15 kills. Sophomore Stacie Lippert (Alma, MI) and freshman Kelsey Sears (Traverse City West HS) added 16 and 19 digs respectively while senior Katy Luimes had 11 kills and five blocks. Junior middle-hitter Molly Krikke (Greenwich, OH) also contributed 12 kills, 10 digs and five blocks.
In the win over Capital, DeGroot tossed out 38 assists and collected 21 digs. Krikke also had a big match with 12 kills and nine blocks. Vogel and Luimes chipped in with 11 kills apiece while Kalb had 10 kills and 14 digs. Sears also had 26 digs with Lippert and sophomore Sarah Ernst (Fort Wayne, IN) contributing 10 digs apiece.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
Calvin 2, Westminster (PA) 0
ERIE, PA – The nationally-ranked Calvin women’s soccer team improved to 7-0-0 on the season with a 2-0 victory over Westminster College Saturday afternoon at the Herb Lauffer Tournament hosted by Penn State-Behrend College.
With the win, Calvin captured the championship of the tournament, finishing as the only unbeaten team in the four-team tournament. Saturday’s Calvin-Westminster game was in doubt until the final 15 minutes when the Knights scored a pair of goals. Senior Jill Capel (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) broke a scoreless deadlock, heading in a crossing pass by senior Leah Scholten (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS with 12:01 left in regulation. With 1:50 left in regulation, sophomore Elizabeth Ribbens (Tinley Park, IL/Victor J. Andrew HS) came up with the clinching goal, whipping in a rebound off a shot originally struck by senior Sarah Weesies (Kalamazoo Christian HS).
Calvin finished the game with a 16-6 shots at goal advantage. Freshmen goalkeepers Amanda Bergsma (Walker/Calvin Christian HS) and Kayla Sulzer (St. Charles, MO/St. Charles HS) split time in nets in leading Calvin to its fourth consecutive shutout victory. Both goalkeepers came up with two saves apiece.
Calvin will now prepare to host conference opponent St. Mary’s (IN) on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. in a non-conference game at Calvin’s Zuidema Field.
MEN’S SOCCER
Wilmington 3, Calvin 0
WILMINGTON, OH – Host Wilmington captured the championship of its own Kiwanis Classic with a 3-0 victory over Calvin Saturday night.
Wilmington took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Michael Kizkiel in the 40th minute of play. The Quakers (5-1-0) then took a 2-0 lead on a goales into the second half. Chad Garman closed out the scoring for Wilmington with a goal with just over 10 minutes remaining. Wilmington’s Alex Van der Sluisj assisted on all three Quaker goals.
Wilmington outshot Calvin 20-7. Junior Matt Gardner (Wilmington, OH) went the distance in nets for Calvin (2-3-1) and came up with seven saves.
Calvin will now prepare to open its MIAA campaign on Wednesday when it travels to Alma for a 4:00 p.m. contest.
MEN’S GOLF
ALMA – Calvin maintained hold of fifth place in the overall MIAA standings, taking fifth at MIAA Outing #3 on Saturday. Saturday’s outing was hosted by Alma at the Pine River Country Club.
Calvin posted a fifth place team score of 312 on Saturday, four strokes behind host Alma. Tri-State edged Hope for first place on Saturday with a team score of 294, two strokes ahead of the Flying Dutchmen. Hope continues to hold an 18-stroke lead over Olivet and a 19-stroke lead over Tri-State in the overall MIAA Standings.
Calvin’s top individual finisher on Saturday was freshman Aaron Hargett (Lake Odessa HS) with a sterling round of 74 that left him tied for sixth place. Senior Jeff TenBrink (Kalamazoo Christian HS) was next with a round of 78. Sophomore Brad Tindall (Vicksburg HS) also had a good day with a round of 79. Rounding out Calvin’s finishers were freshmen Davis Moes and Jon Kuiper of Grand Rapids Christian HS as both golfers had rounds of 81.
Calvin returns to action on Wednesday when it competes at an MIAA Tournament hosted by Kalamazoo at the Prairies Golf Club.
