Longtime Albion College SID and Friend of Calvin College Dies;
Men’s Tennis Team Receives ITA All-Academic Honors;

LONGTIME ALBION SID AND FRIEND OF CALVIN COLLEGE DIES
A longtime friend of Calvin College and of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has died. Former Albion sports information director Robin Hartman passed away on Saturday night at the age of 52.
A native of Toledo, Ohio, Hartman served as Albion’s sports information director from 1987-2001. Hartman had been serving as editor of the Fort Wayne, Ind., News-Sentinel's PrepSports section since 2004.
While at Albion, Hartman often volunteered his time, serving as a statistician at Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) events or with Division I universities such as the University of Michigan. Hartman also volunteered his time for Calvin College, serving as the official statistician for NCAA III softball and soccer regionals hosted by Calvin. In addition, Hartman volunteered his broadcast services when the Calvin women’s basketball team reached the NCAA III Tournament in 1997, 1998 and 1999.
Hartman also wrote a witty weekly football preview for the MIAA football web site for several years, highlighting the upcoming week’s matchups.
Funeral services for Hartman will be this Saturday in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

MEN’S TENNIS TEAM EARNS ITA ALL-ACADEMIC AWARD
For the third straight year, the Calvin men's tennis team has received the prestigious All-Academic Team Award from the International Tennis Association (ITA). The ITA All-Academic Team award is open to any ITA program that has a
cumulative team grade point average of 3.20 or above (on a 4.00 scale). Calvin is one of 30 NCAA Division III men’s tennis teams that earned the award this year.
Under the direction of third-year head coach John Ross, the Calvin men's tennis team posted a cumulative team GPA of 3.58.
In addition, six members of the Calvin men's tennis team have received ITA Scholar-Athlete accolades. In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status a player needed to have been a varsity letter winner and posted a grade point average of at least a 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale) for the recent 2005-06 academic year.
Receiving ITA Scholar-Athlete honors from Calvin are graduated seniors Rafael Siebenschein, junior Dan Volkema and David Sneller, sophomores Michael Goorhouse and Ricky Tilton and freshman Eric Bratt.
Siebenschein is from Lynden, Washington. He is a graduate of Lytdnen Christian High School. Volkema and Goorhouse are both graduates of Holland Christian High School with Volkema hailing from Spring Lake and Goorhouse from Holland. Sneller is from Sheboygan, Wisconsin. He is a graduate of Sheboygan County Christian High School. Tilton is from Gap, Pennsylvania and is a graduate of Lancaster County Christian High School. Bratt is from Grand Rapids and is a graduate of Grand Rapids Christian High School.
The Calvin men's tennis team posted an overall dual match record of 14-5 this past spring. The Knights also finished tied for second in the final MIAA standings.
DETERS SUFFERS HARD-LUCK LOSS
EASTLAKE, OH – 2005 Calvin College graduate Jim Deters slipped to 10-9 on the season for the Lake County Captains with a hard-luck 3-0 loss to the visiting Lexington Legends Sunday night. Deters allowed only three hits over six innings but received no run support while his defense committed two errors that led to a pair of unearned runs.
Deters gave up an RBI double in the second and then a two-run single in the fifth that was preceeded by a pair of errors by the Lake Coth just one earned run in six innings of work as he struck out five and walked two. In giving up just one earned run, Deters lowered his season earned run average to 3.32. Deters continues to lead the Lake County Captains in innings pitched (154.2) and strikeouts (100). He has also walked only 26 batters on the season.
The Lake County Captains are a Class A affiliate of the Cleveland Indians competing in the South Atlantic “Sally” League.

FORMER CALVIN STANDOUT NAMED HEAD TRACK COACH AT VALPARAISO
2002 Calvin College graduate Ryan Moore has been named the head men’s and women’s track and field coach at Valparaiso University. While at Calvin, Moore was a standout discus thrower, winning the event at the 2002 MIAA Field Day which earned him a spot on the All-MIAA track and field team. A native of Wexford, Pennsylvania, Moore later qualified for the 2002 NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field Championships in the discus.
