CALVIN GOLF TEAMS RECEIVE HIGH MARKS FROM GOLF DIGEST

The Calvin men’s and women’s golf teams have received high academic marks
in a recent ranking released by Golf Digest Magazine.

The noted golf publication recently came up with a series of top 50 lists as
part of its second annual College Golf Guide which is available in its upcoming
September issue (available on newsstands August 8).

In the top 50 list for the best men’s academic schools, Calvin is ranked
16th. In the top 50 list for the best women’s academic schools, Calvin is
ranked 17th. Princeton holds the No. 1 spot on both the men’s and women’s
top 50 academic lists. Calvin is one of 12 Division III schools in the top 20 of
the men’s list and one of eight Division III schools in the top 20 of the
women’s list.

On the top 50 academic lists, Golf Digest states: “for juniors who are
excellent students first, golfers second, these schools provide the best
education and provide an opportunity to play.”

This past year, the Calvin women’s golf team under the direction of head
coach Jerry Bergsma received the MIAA’s Team GPA Award (3.30 team gpa or
above), compiling a cumulative team grade point average of 3.47. The women’s
golf team also had three members of its team named to the 2005-06 MIAA Academic
Honor Roll for maintaining at least a 3.50 grade point average. Those three
individuals were seniors Jodi Offringa (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS), Annie
Huizenga (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) and Margaret Tassaro (Carnegie,
PA/Carlynton HS).

Under the direction of head coach Brian Bolt, the Calvin men’s golf team had
two individuals earn spots on the 2005-06 MIAA Academic Honor Roll. Those two
individuals were seniors Nick Bolt (New Berlin, WI/Milwaukee Lutheran HS) and
Ryan Fischer (North Haledon, NJ/Eastern Christian HS).

“We’re very pleased to see our name on the academic list put forth by Golf
Digest,” said Calvin men’s athletics director Dr. Jim Timmer. “I’m a
firm believer that excellence in academics goes hand-in-hand with excellence in
athletics so it is reassuring to see a national publication recognize what
Calvin has to offer to a student-athlete.”

Calvin women’s athletics director Dr. Nancy Meyer agreed. “It’s great to
see both of our golf teams receive this type of recognition,” she said. “If
you’re looking for a school to combine excellence in academics and athletics,
Calvin is great place to be.”

The full college rankings, including every Division I, Division II and Division
III school in the U.S. with a golf program, can be viewed now at
www.golfdigest.com/collegeguide.

"Our purpose with the College Golf Guide is to promote the idea of playing golf
during the college years," said Jerry Tarde, Chairman and Editor-in-Chief of
Golf Digest. "Technology today has given students the ability to have
complete control over the college search process, and for the 225,000 boys and
girls playing high school golf, our guide offers a crash course in getting
started."

Five criteria form the basis for academic rankings: a college golf team's
adjusted scoring average, player growth while on the team, academics, climate
and coaches/facilities.

This year's academics numbers come courtesy of U.S. News & World Report's
respected "America's Best Colleges" guidebook. The climate numbers were provided
by Longitudes Group and measure each school's 30-year average of playable days
from September 1 to May 31.

CALVIN STUDENT INTERNS WITH TOLEDO MUD HENS

(The following press release was written by Calvin media relations staff writer
Myrna Anderson).

A Calvin senior is spending the summer working as an intern for the Toledo Mud
Hens, an internship he landed through the college's new sports management
concentration.

Dean Exoo, 21, a sports management major who hails from Whitinsville,
Massachusetts, is working for the Triple-A club, the top farm team for the
Detroit Tigers.

"I love sports, so it's great to be able to work with a professional sports
team and see what that's like," says Exoo, who works in the operations
department, doing general maintenance for the team facility and overseeing
ticket takers and ushers. "A lot of what we do is to make the games run
smoothly."

Exoo says he can easily work 12-hour days when the team is in town. In fact his
first week on the job he put in 75 hours!

The sports management program, which debuted in the fall of 2005, is one of
three possible concentrations (exercise science and teacher education are the
others) for physical education majors. Exoo's job with the Mud Hens is the first
internship offered through the program.

"A previous student of mine interned at the Mud Hens," says physical education
professor Jim Timmer, who taught and coached in Cleveland prior to coming to
Calvin. "He said send me your best one, and we sent him Dean."

Timmer hopes to develop internships for the concentration in every area of
sports management, including broadcasting, private health club management and
both college and professional sports.

An internship in sports management field accomplishes a number of things for a
student like Exoo, says Timmer.

"It gives them an inside look. It gives them a great networking ability. And it
applies what they learn in class. If I'm teaching something outdated, they can
come back to me and say, 'Coach, this is how they do it.'"

Exoo, who is this year's recipient of the Dave Tuuk Sports Management
Scholarship, hopes his internship is a springboard to a job in professional
sports.
