Calvin Track and Field Teams Receive Academic Honors From USTCA

The Calvin women's track and field teams has again achieved academic and athletic excellence.

For the sixth straight year, the Calvin women’s track and field team has received the all-academic team award from the United States Track and Field Coaches Association (USTCA).

Teams were eligible for the for honor if they had a minimum of 14 members who participated in the 2006 outdoor season and recorded a minimum 3.00 (4.00 scale) cumulative grade point average as a group. The Calvin women's track and field team posted a 3.47 cumulative grade point average. Calvin was coached by Dr. Jong-il Kim.

In addition, 14 Calvin track and field athletes have received individual all-academic accolades from the USTCA. To qualify individually, a student-athlete needed to have recorded a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.25 and participated in the NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field Championships or met an NCAA III provisional or automatic qualifying standard.

Of the 14 Calvin athletes, seven are from the men’s team and seven are from the women’s team.

Individuals from the Calvin men's track and field team that received all-academic recognition were seniors Nate Meckes (Bay City/Westland Lutheran HS), Harrison Jorritsma (Beamsville, ON/Hamilton District Christian HS) and Justin Grasmeyer (Norwalk, CA/Valley Christian HS); sophomores Jared Cok (Bozeman, MT/Manhattan Christian HS) and Joel Baker (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian HS) and freshmen Michael Buist (Grand Rapids/Calvin Christian HS) and Nate DeHaan (Byron Center/South Christian HS).

 At the NCAA III Track and Field Championships this past May, Meckes also gained All-America honors in the shot put (2nd place) while Buist picked up All-America accolades in the high jump (4th place).

On the women's side, Calvin individuals that earned the award include seniors Missy Smith (Ada/Grand Rapids Christian HS), Christine Hendricks (Cincinnati, OH/Turpin HS) and Camille Medema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS); juniors Lisa Winkle (Grand Rapids/South Christian HS) and Lydia Singer (Wilmington, DE/Hillcrest Academy); sophomore Sarah Wittingen (East Grand Rapids/East Grand Rapids HS) and freshman Jennifer DeFauw (Harper Woods/Grosse Pointe North HS).

Six of the seven individuals also picked up All-America accolades at the NCAA III Track and Field Championships with Smith doing so in the pole vault (3rd place), Hendricks in the heptathlon (1st place), Medema in the 800 meters (3rd place), Winkle in the long jump (7th place), 400 meters (5th place) 4x100 meter relay (8th place) and 4x400 meter relay (4th place), Wittingen in the 400 meter hurdles (6th place) and in the 4x100 and 4x400 meter relays and DeFauw in the 4x400 meter relay.
