Women’s Basketball Team Receives Academic Award From WBCA;
Three-Game Win Streak by Deters Snapped

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL TEAM RECEIVES WBCA ACADEMIC AWARD

The Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) has announced its 2005-2006 Academic Top 25 Team Honor Roll for NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III, NAIA and Junior College/Community College and Calvin College is one of 25 Division III schools that have been so honored. The awards recognize teams throughout the nation that have the highest grade point averages (GPA) for the 2005-2006 season based upon nominations submitted by WBCA-member coaches.

Under the direction of head coach John Ross, the Calvin women’s basketball team compiled a 3.467 cumulative grade point average, leaving the Knights in a tie for ninth place with Muhlenberg College (PA) on the list of 25 Division III teams that made the honor roll.

Earlier this summer, the Calvin women’s basketball team earned the MIAA’s Team GPA Award which requires a minimum grade point average of 3.30.

DETERS FALLS TO 7-7 WITH LOSS TO HAGERSTOWN SUNS

EASTLAKE, OH - Lake County Captains righthander Jim Deters saw a three-game win streak come to an end as he suffered a 5-2 defeat to the visiting Hagerstown Suns Monday evening.

A 2005 Calvin graduate, Deters struggled early, giving up three runs in the first and one in the second before coming back to throw five straight innings of shutout ball.

Eight men came to the plate in the opening inning against Deters as the Suns too control early. Deters (7-7) finished the game by allowing four runs - all earned - in seven innings of work. He also gave up nine hits, struck out two and walked one.

Despite the defeat, Deters continues to hold a 3.62 earned run average. He also leads the Lake County Captains in victories, innings pitched (117) and strikeouts (72). He has given up only 17 walks on the year.

The Lake County Captains are a Class A affiliate of the Cleveland Indians and a member of the South Atlantic “Sally” League.
