GRAND RAPIDS - It was Senior Day for the Knights as Calvin hosted the
Tri-State Thunder in an afternoon doubleheader. Eleven Knights played their
last games in a Calvin uniform but ended on a good note sweeping Tri-State by
scores of 7-5 and 10-2.

The Knights got off on the right foot in starting the first game scoring four
runs in the bottom of the first. Mark Asma (Portage/Kalamazoo Christian) led
off with a triple and scored the first run of the game when freshman Jacob
Vriesman (Denver, CO/Denver Christian) ripped a double into left field. After
a sacrifice bunt and another triple by Mike Aggen (Evergreen Park, IL/Evergreen
Park), the Knights were up by a quick score of 4-0.

Tri-State slowly clawed its way back into the game scoring once in the second,
twice in the third, and two more in the fifth to take a 5-4 lead. But that
lead did not last long as the Knights came back in the bottom of the fifth to
score two more off of one hit to regain the lead for good. Asma scored the
go-ahead run off of a triple by Vriesman.

Calvin scored an insurance run in the sixth frame when after Aggen reached on
an error and made his way to third via a past ball and a sacrifice bunt, Mark
Tighelaar (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian) knocked him in with a sacrifice
fly hit out to center field.

For the Knights, Kyle Cousins (Holland/Holland Christian) started the game at
pitcher lasting four and two-thirds giving up five runs off of eight hits.
Scott Larsen (Hastings/Hastings) finished the game while collecting the win to
improve his record to 1-1 on the year.

Jordan Maxxson for the Thunder picked up the loss in the contest pitching five
innings allowing six runs and five hits.

The Knights started off the second game a bit slower. After falling behind
2-0 through four and a half innings, Calvin opened the floodgates in the fifth
crossing the plate six times. The Knights batted around collecting seven hits
in the inning doing most of the damage with two outs.

Leading 6-2 heading into the bottom of the sixth, the Knights showed Tri-State
they weren't done yet. They added four more to their total in which each of
the four runs came off of a grand slam hit to left field by Vriesman. It was
Vriesman's first collegiate home run. The grand slam capped off a great day
for him as he had four hits in the afternoon which included a double, triple,
and the home run. To go along with his four hits were six runs batted in.

Tim Stoeffler (St. Joseph/GR Community College) hurled the complete game
allowing two runs off of ten hits en route to his third win of the season.

Dusty Bergman for Tri-State received the loss after giving up six runs through
five innings of work.

Calvin (17-23, 15-13 MIAA) finishes the year in fourth place in league
standings.
