Calvin Men's Club Lacrosse Team Headed Back to Nationals;
Women's Club Lacrosse Team Closes Out Successful Campaign with Tournament
Berth;
Jim Deters Continues to Shine For Lake County Captains
MEN'S CLUB LACROSSE
The 2006 US Lacrosse Men's Division Intercollegiate Associates National
Championship Division A and B fields have been announced by US Lacrosse and for
the second straight year, Calvin has received a national tournament bid.
The teams will travel to Dallas, Texas where they will compete from May 9-13
at the Russell Creek Athletic Complex and Tom Kimbrough Stadium. The event is
sponsored by Lax World, Sports Her Way and STX.
Colorado State University received the top-seed in the Division A bracket
while the University of San Diego will look to defend its Division B title as
the top-seed again in the other bracket.
Calvin enters the tournament as the ninth seed and the ninth ranked team in
the nation in Division B. The Knights will face the University of Northern
Colorado on Wednesday (May 10) at 1 pm (CST) with live coverage expected at:

In 2005, the Knights went to nationals as the #7 seed, losing a quarter-final
match in overtime to #2 Utah Valley State. After winning the following day,
Calvin finished the season with a #4 ranking of the 88 teams in the nation
competing at the Division B level.
Calvin (12-7) advanced to the national tournament by winning the CCLA (Central
Collegiate Lacrosse Association) Division B Tournament title for the fourth
straight year, defeating 13th-ranked Dayton 6-4 in the semifinals and
21st-ranked Ferris State 14-6 in the championship game. Calvin has now won
seven straight games after opening the year with a 5-7 record which included
regular season defeats to Dayton (12-4) and to Ferris State (14-7).
The Knights have been led this year by senior defenseman Free Shaw (Dayton,
OH) who was recently named to the 2006 CCLA regular season Defensive MVP and
the 2006 CCLA Tournament Defensive MVP while also landing a spot on the 2006
CCLA All-Conference First Team. A year ago, Shaw was named to the 2005 All
Tournament team at nationals.
Calvin's sparkplugs on offense have been freshman attacker Lucas
Huyser-Wierenga (Edmonton, AB), sophomore attacker Ben Lo Cascio (Chicago, IL)
and junior midfielder Jimmy Deterding (Annapolis, MD). A first team All-CCLA
selection this spring, Huyser-Wierenga leads the Knights in scoring with 20
goals, 18 assists and 38 points. Lo Cascio has 17 goals, 11 assists and 28
points while Deterding has 13 goals, six assists and 19 points. Also a first
team All-CCLA selection this spring, senior midfielder Nick Good (Dayton, OH)
has also played a key role, picking up eight goals, four assists and 12 points.

Senior A.T. Bulus has been the starting goaltender and has a solid
goals-against-average of 3.22. Bulus started the year as a midfielder but was
pressed into service at goalie because of an injury.
The Knights are led by head coach Andy Sharp, an East Grand Rapids High School
graduate.
WOMEN'S LACROSSE
The Calvin women's club lacrosse team recently concluded a successful spring
season, posting an 8-5 overall record that included a trip to the WCLL
(Women's Collegiate Lacrosse League) Division B playoffs where the Knights
went 1-1, falling to St. Mary's 5-4 in its opener before coming back to
defeat Bowling Green State University 10-7 in the consolation round.
Under the direction of head coach Angela Scheff, the Knights took second in
Division B of the WCLL, finishing only behind Central Michigan University. The
Knights split a pair of games with Central Michigan, falling 16-5 early in the
year before coming back to win 7-6 in a game played at Calvin. The 7-6 victory
marked the only WCLL defeat of the year for Central Michigan.
Calvin was led by senior captain Alyssa Homan (Ann Arbor) who scored a
team-leading 29 goals on the year. Homan then became the first player in Calvin
women's lacrosse history to earn a spot on the All-WCLL team.
JIM DETERS MINOR LEAGUE BASEBALL UPDATE
EASTLAKE, OH - 2005 Calvin College graduate Jim Deters has continued his
impressive spring for the Lake County Captains, a Class A Minor League
affiliate of the Cleveland Indians.
Also a graduate of Kalamazoo Christian High School, Deters improved to 2-0 on
the year with a 6-4 victory over the Hagerstown Suns Thursday night. Deters
tossed six shutout innings before giving up three runs in the seventh. Deters
departed after seven innings of work with a 6-3 lead however and the Captains
were later able to finish off the 6-4 win.
The seven-inning stint was the longest of the year for Deters who struck out
six and walked only one while scattering four hits.
Deters currently holds a 3.09 earned run average on the year and has struck
out 34 batters in 35 innings of work while walking only five batters. Deters
leads the Captains in innings pitched and strikeouts and is tied for the
team-lead in games started. Opposing batters are hitting just .250 against
Deters.
