A sterling pitching effort by freshman Nate Pocock (Wayland, MA) allowed Calvin (3-9 overall, 1-1 MIAA) to gain a doubleheader split with visiting Albion Saturday afternoon at Calvin Field.

Battling cold and windy conditions, Pocock helped Calvin gain a 5-1 victory in the nightcap, striking out seven batters and walking one as he went the distance to gain his first collegiate victory. Pocock (1-2) picked up all the run support he would need in the bottom of the first as the Knights scored a pair of runs, using an RBI groundout by senior Mark Tigchelaar (Grand Rapids Christian HS) and a run-scoring single by junior Nick Caudle (Calvin Christian HS). Caudle then sparked a four-run sixth inning with an RBI single with sophomore Alex Marcus (Willmar, MN) also belting an RBI double in the uprising.

In game one, Albion scored four times in the sixth to break a 3-3 tie and chase Calvin starter Tim Stoeffler (St. Joseph). Stoeffler (0-2) struck out eight batters but allowed nine hits in 5.2 innings of work. Senior Mark Asma (Kalamazoo Christian HS) had two of Calvin’s five hits including a double that led to a run in the fourth.

Saturday’s twinbill was the first of two straight doubleheaders between Calvin and Albion as they will meet at Albion on Monday in a doubleheader slated to start at 1:00 p.m. The twinbill be broadcast through the Albion web site at: http://media.albion.edu/sports
