CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR MARCH 9, 2006 (PART ONE)
NCAA III WOMEN'S SWIMMING & DIVING CHAMPIONSHIPS
MINNEAPOLIS, MN * Calvin opened the NCAA III Swimming and Diving Championships with a strong team performance in the morning prelims on Thursday.
Calvin advanced both its 200 freestyle and 400 medley relay teams into the evening finals while junior Becky Weima (Grand Rapids Christian HS) gained the top seed in the finals of the 50 freestyle with another record-setting performance.
Weima ripped off the top swim of the morning prelims in the 50 freestyle with a school-record time of 23.32, breaking her own record of 23.52 set a month ago at the MIAA Championships.
Weima also led off Calvin's 200 freestyle relay team that picked up the fourth-best performance of the morning prelims in a time of 1:36.28. Kenyon had the top time of the morning in 1:34.55. Weima was joined on Calvin's 200 freestyle relay by junior Liz Ingebrigtsen (Bensenville, IL/Timothy Christian HS), freshman Cara VanWoerkom (Calvin Christian HS) and sophomore Kat Vinson (Kaneohe, HI/Punahou HS).
Calvni's 400 medley relay team of freshman Jordan Scott (), junior Alex Wilson (Ellsworth, OH/Western Reserve HS), senior Abby Johnson (Grand Haven HS) and Weima clocked in with the seventh-best time of the prelims with a time of 3:56.48.
Competing in the prelims but not advancing to the finals were Vinson in the 50 freestyle (25th in 24.69); Johnson in the 200 IM (26th in 2:10.79) and Wilson in the 200 IM (37th in 2:12.35).
Calvin freshman Erica Deur (Holland Christian HS) is currently competing in the one-meter diving competition with the finals set for Thursday evening.
