Women's Basketball Advances to MIAA Tournament Semifinals - Rematch With Alma Next
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Calvin 75, Adrian 46
GRAND RAPIDS * Calvin opened MIAA Tournament play with a 75-46 first round victory over the Bulldogs of Adrian Tuesday evening. The Knights, ranked 14th in the latest D3hoops.com poll and 13th in the USA Today ESPN Division III Women's poll, came into the tournament as the number-two seed and played like it as Adrian was unable to ever find some sort of rhythm.
Turnovers and second chance opportunities for the Knights along with Adrian foul trouble allowed Calvin to take an early 19-8 lead. Three first half fouls for Adrian post player Jenny Carlson resulted in the Bulldogs fighting a continuous height disadvantage with the Knights out rebounding Adrian 23-15. Calvin then cruised on to a 37-22 halftime lead behind junior Lisa Winkle's 13 first half points.
The second half brought the same story for the struggling Bulldogs as the Knights led by as many as 33 points. The referees were kept busy throughout the as 37 fouls were called*23 against Adrian and 14 against Calvin.
Calvin head coach John Ross was happy with the win. "Adrian is a scary team but we did a good job taking away their penetration and shooting. We did a great job of executing on offense and in the post. We needed to have a good win because the atmosphere is different in the tournament and it was good to get everyone some minutes."
Everyone on the Calvin roster played at least eight minutes and all but two players ended up scoring.
Calvin was led in scoring by Marcia Harris who put in 18 followed by Lisa Winkle's 17 and 11 boards resulting in her 27th collegiate double-double. Adrian's top scorers were Nichole Roose and Jenny Carlson with eight points apiece.
Coach Ross also emphasized the strength of the MIAA conference. "Every team in this conference is really good. The strength of this conference is unbelievable and there are no easy games so we can't look past anything."
The next game for Calvin (22-3) will take place Thursday night as they host sixth seeded Alma which defeated St. Mary's 49-46 in other first round action Tuesday night. Calvin defeated Alma 64-56 this past Saturday and also edged the Scots 58-55 back on November 29.
