MEN'S BASKETBALL
Calvin 71, Olivet 61

OLIVET * Calvin used a strong surge down the stretch to propel itself to a 71-61 victory at Olivet Saturday afternoon, allowing the Knights to maintain sole possession of first place in the MIAA standings.

Ranked 25th in the latest D3hoops.com Top-25 poll, Calvin improved to 18-5 overall with the victory but more importantly to 10-1 in the MIAA, one game ahead of rival Hope which improved to 9-2 in the MIAA with a victory at Adrian on Wednesday.

With one week left in the regular season, Calvin needs a win over Albion or Kalamazoo to clinch a share of the final MIAA regular season crown. Calvin plays host to Albion on Wednesday (7:30 pm) and to Kalamazoo on Saturday (3:00 pm).

In its game with Olivet (6-17 overall, 2-10 MIAA), Calvin took a 34-32 halftime lead after rolling off a 10-2 run over the final 1:48 of the first half.

Calvin opened the second half with a 17-6 surge to take a 51-38 lead with 13:52 remaining. Olin countered with a 12-1 run over the next three minutes however to creep to within two at 52-50 with 10:32 left to play.

Holding on to a 56-53 lead with 7:22 remaining, Calvin went to freshman Caleb Veldhouse (Sioux Falls, SD) and Veldhouse delivered, converting a pair of free throws and drilling a clutch three-pointer after a layup by teammate Eric DeVries (Unity Christian HS) moments before. The Veldhouse triple gave Calvin a 10-point lead at 63-53 and the double-digit lead would hold the rest of the way as the Knights reeled off 12 unanswered points over a four-minute stretch to seal the win.

Junior center Josh Meckes (Bay City) led the way for Calvin with 17 points, converting all seven of his field goal attempts including a dunk the first half. Meckes was one of four Calvin players to reach double-digits in scoring as Veldhouse and seniors Andy Draayer (Denver, CO) and Kyle Trewhella (Rockford HS) chipped in with 12 points apiece.

Trewhella finished with four assists against just one turnover while also blocking a shot. Veldhouse also had four assists while Draayer had four rebounds and three assists. Junior forward Kyle Snoeyink (Calvin Christian HS) also played an integral role, ripping down a game-high 11 rebounds while also contributing eight points.

As a team, Calvin shot 45.5 percent from the floor including 52.2 percent in the second half. The Knights also held a 10-point advantage at the free throw line as they converted 16 of 22 attempts from the charity stripe while Olivet was six of nine at the line.

Olivet was led in defeat by De'Andre Pruitt who tossed in 14 points while Ellington Fields had 13 and Steve Johnson 10.

HOLLAND * Calvin's seven-game win streak was cut short this afternoon as Hope College (22-1, 14-0 MIAA) extended its winning streak to 19 games, remaining undefeated in the MIAA. Struggling offensively and committing too many turnovers, the Knights (19-3, 12-2 MIAA) fell 71-46 in their first game at the new DeVos Fieldhouse.

With the win, Hope clinched a share of the MIAA regular season title as well as home-court advantage for the upcoming MIAA Tournament.

The first half got off to a bad start for the Knights as Hope led 15-2 after eight minutes of play, Calvin's only point coming from sophomore point guard Lindsey Peuler (Grandville/Grandville). Hope's offense was fueled by junior Ellen Wood, who came off of the bench to score 17 points in the first half. Her 13th point gave Hope a 31-12 lead with 5:30 left in the half. Senior Bria Ebels then added a three-pointer to give the Dutch their largest lead of the half: 22 points at 34-12. Peuler answered with a three, cutting Hope's lead to 19 points. Calvin staged a 11-2 scoring run to close out the half, which was enough to place the Knights only 11 points behind Hope for the second half, 39-28.

Before the run, Calvin's field goal percentage was only 31 percent, compared to Hope's 67 percentage on field goals. At the end of the half, Calvin had raised its percentage to 43.5 percent, while Hope was scoring a close 47 percent from the floor. Adding to Calvin's woes in the first half were 10 turnovers, off of which Hope scored 12 points. While Calvin drew seven turnovers from Hope, the Knights managed to score only three points off the Hope turnovers.

Calvin's second half began worse than the first, as the Dutch put together an 18-2 scoring run that left the Knights 27 points behind Hope, at 57-30. However, Calvin soon turned the game upside down, scoring sixteen points in a little over five minutes, while keeping Hope scoreless. The Knights were again within 11 points at 57-46. Hope stepped up the game again and spent the last six minutes of play scoring 14 points and playing a tough defense that prevented Calvin from making any baskets. Calvin ended their 87th meeting with Hope 25 points behind, Hope winning 71-46.

All of Calvin's points came from five players, with only three points (to Hope's 31) coming from off the bench. Junior Lisa Winkle (Grand Rapids/South Christian) posted her 25th collegiate double-double, leading the Knights with 21 points and 12 rebounds. Winkle's baskets give her a career scoring total of 1,179, moving her up to 6th place in the Calvin 1,000 point club. Other Calvin points came from freshman Marcia Harris (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian) who had 12 points, Peuler with 8, freshmand Sarah Partridge (East Lansing/East Lansing) with a three-pointer, and sophomore Charis Larson (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian) with 2.

Leading Hope were Wood with 19 points, Bria Ebels with 12 points, and Jordyn Boles with 10 points.

Calvin returns to MIAA action next Wednesday at Olivet College at 6:00 p.m.
