BECKY WEIMA NAMED TO MICHIGAN'S BEST LIST BY DETROIT FREE PRESS
Calvin junior Becky Weima has been named to the prestigious Michigan's Best List by the Detroit Free Press. The list includes athletes and coaches from around the state of Michigan at the professional and amateur levels who have made significant achievements in the sports world over the previous year.
A graduate of Grand Rapids Christian High School, Weima became the first swimmer in Calvin history to win an individual national championship last March as she took first place in the 200 freestyle at the 2005 NCAA III Championships. Weima also took second in the 500 freestyle and fourth in the 100 freestyle at the national meet to earn All-America accolades in both events. She also swam on Calvin's two fourth place relay teams * the 400 and 800 freestyle relays. As a team, Calvin finished 10th at the national meet, posting its first-ever top-10 national finish.
This year's list also includes Brendan Shanahan of the Detroit Red Wings, Chauncy Billips of the Detroit Pistons, boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr., Michigan State basketball coach Joanne P. McCallie and Grand Valley State football coach Chuck Martin just to name a few.
Weima is the latest in a string of individuals at Calvin who have been named the Michigan's Best List by the Free Press. Other individuals at Calvin to receive the honors include Calvin women's cross country coach Nancy Meyer, Calvin men's cross country coach Brian Diemer, Calvin men's and women's track and field coach Jong-Il Kim.
The Michigan's Best List was released by the Detroit Free Press in its Friday edition last weekend. The list is not available on-line. Readers who picked up a copy of Friday's Detroit Free Press can vote for the individual they feel is Michigan's Best athletic figure through a ballot included in the Friday edition of the sports section.
