Hope Sweeps Calvin in Hoops on Rivalry Saturday

MEN'S BASKETBALL
Hope 73, Calvin 55

HOLLAND * The 158th meeting between Calvin and Hope in men's basketball belonged to the home team as the Flying Dutchmen of Hope College handed Calvin a 73-55 defeat the DeVos Fieldhouse. Saturday's game marked the first-ever meeting between the two rivals as the sparkling new facility.

Calvin continues to hold an 80-78 series lead but Hope has retaken the overall lead in points scored in the series as the Flying Dutchmen now have scored 10,612 points to the 10,605 points of Calvin.

The Hope victory allowed Albion to move into sole possession of first place in the MIAA standings as the Britons are now 4-0 in league play with Calvin and Hope tied for second at 3-1.

Ranked second in the latest D3hoops.com Top-25 poll, Hope (14-1 overall, 3-1 MIAA) overcame an early 6-1 deficit to take a 9-8 lead on a jumper by senior Greg Immink and never trailed again. Hope outscored Calvin 20-10 over the final 10 minutes of the first half to take a 38-22 halftime lead.

The Hope lead stretched to as many as 29 points in the second half before a final 17-5 run by Calvin produced the final 18-point margin of victory for the Flying Dutchmen.

Hope shot 42.6 percent from the field while holding Calvin to 33 percent field goal shooting including just 28.1 percent in the first half. Hope placed three players in double-figures in scoring led by senior center Eric Voisin who tallied 14 points and eight rebounds while sophomore Marcus VanderHeide and junior Stephen Cramer had 12 points apiece. Hope senior Andy Phillips added seven points and a game-high 12 rebounds as Hope held a 45-37 rebounding advantage.

Calvin senior Kyle Trewhella (Rockford HS) was the only Knight in double-figures with 18 points on 8-of-13 shooting. Freshman Caleb Veldhouse (Sioux Falls, SD) chipped in with nine points.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Hope 64, Calvin 54

In a meeting of nationally-ranked teams, Hope College came out on top, defeating rival Calvin 64-54 Saturday afternoon at the Calvin Fieldhouse.

Hope (14-1 overall, 7-0 MIAA) came into the game ranked 11th in the latest D3hoops.com Top-25 poll while Calvin (12-2 overall, 6-1 MIAA) came in ranked 14th in the same poll.

Hope held a 32-27 halftime lead behind 41.4 percent field goal shooting in the opening 20 minutes but Calvin was able to hang around by connecting on 15-of-19 (.789) at the free throw in the first half.

Calvin then closed to within a point at 44-43 on a three-pointer from the right wing by sophomore point guard Lindsey Peuler with 13:18 left to play. Hope responded with a 13-1 run however to take a 57-44 lead with 7:07 left and held a double-digit lead the rest of the way.

Junior Ellen Wood was a difference maker for Hope, scoring a game-high 18 points off the bench on 7-of-11 field goal shooting while senior Bria Ebels had 14 points and sophomore Jordyn Boles 10 points.

Calvin was led in defeat by freshman Marcia Harris (Grand Rapids Christian HS) who pumped in 15 points to stretch her double-figure scoring streak to 14 games. Junior Lisa Winkle (South Christian HS) stretched her double-figure scoring streak to 21 games with 11 points while Peuler had 13 points. Senior Sarah Winkle (South Christian HS) also grabbed a game-high eight rebounds but Hope held a 41-30 rebounding advantage overall.

Calvin returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Olivet at 6:00 p.m. Both teams are currently tied for second place in the league standings.
