Calvin 67, St. Mary's 62
GRAND RAPIDS * Calvin captured its ninth straight win and remained undefeated in MIAA play after a 67-62 victory over conference opponent St. Mary's College (5-9, 3-3 MIAA) Saturday afternoon at the Calvin Fieldhouse. Now holding a 11-1 overall record and a 5-0 MIAA record, Calvin stands tied for first place with Hope and Olivet in the MIAA.
St. Mary's was bidding for its first-ever victory over Calvin in 25 meetings and pushed the Knights to the limit on Saturday. In fact, Saturday's game marked just the third time that St. Mary's has played Calvin where the final outcome was decided by single digits.
Though St. Mary's opened the game with a three-point shot, Calvin gained the lead with two jumpers by junior Lisa Winkle (Grand Rapids/South Christian) within the first three minutes of play. Sparked by a lay-up by freshman Marcia Harris (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian), Calvin put 17 points between themselves and the Belles with an 18-3 run. Calvin led 25-8. Calvin continued to hold a double-digit lead for much of the remainder of the first half. St. Mary's sophomore Alison Kessler brought the Belles within nine with a three-pointer made just before half-time. At half-time, Calvin led 34-25.
Harris opened the second half for the Knights on a good note with a made lay-up. The next eight minutes saw Calvin's strong lead deteriorate however, as the Belles went on an impressive 10-0 run, making the score 44-45, St. Mary's possessing its first lead since the beginning of the first half. Calvin worked back to a six point lead, 53-47, which included two three-pointers by freshmen Kristi Brummel (Byron Center/South Christian) and Kelly Trewhella (Rockford/Rockford). Two St. Mary's free-throws by Bridget Boyce put the Belles within two points with 4:30 left to play. Trewhella and Brummel stepped up again, each nailing three-point shots, distancing Calvin from St. Mary's 61-53. Calvin maintained at least a six point lead until two consecutive lay-ups by St. Mary's reduced the lead to three points with about 40 seconds to play, 65-62. The Knights wound down the clock to keep the Belles from having a chance to score. Harris sealed the game with two made free-throws a!
fter she was fouled with only one second to play.
Though the Knights committed 18 fouls and turned the ball over 17 times, three freshmen established career-scoring highs in the win. Harris led Calvin with 23 points, Brummel contributed 13 points and six rebounds, and Trewhella nailed four three-pointers for a total of 12 points. Lisa Winkle followed with 10 points and 7 rebounds.
Leading St. Mary's were Boyce with 17 points, junior Bridget Lipke with 16 points and 12 assists, and Kessler with 14 points.
Calvin will face two more MIAA opponents next week in a game at Tri-State on Wednesday, January 11 and a home game against rival Hope at home next Saturday at 3:00 p.m.

MEN'S BASKETBALL
Calvin 64, Alma 60
It wasn't pretty but it was a win and it's a win that the Knights will take. With a 64-60 victory over Alma Saturday night at the Calvin Fieldhouse, the Knights opened their MIAA campaign with a 2-0 record for the first time since the 2003 MIAA season.
The victory was the seventh in eight tries for the Knights who improved to 9-4 overall.
Calvin shot just 37 percent from the field on Saturday but came up with the plays when it needed to down the stretch. Senior Kyle Trewhella (Rockford HS) bagged a three-pointer with just over six minutes remaining to give Calvin a 59-56 lead and the Knights would never trail again.
Still battling the affects of a flu bug that sidelined him for Wednesday's game at Tri-State, junior Josh Meckes (Bay City, MI) also connected on a key baseline jumper that bounced high off the rim and down through the hoop with 50 seconds to play that gave the Knights a 63-58 advantage. Freshman Caleb Veldhouse (Sioux Falls, SD) followed with a free throw with 21 ticks left that gave Calvin a 64-60 lead. Alma (8-5 overall, 1-1 MIAA) then missed three shots in the closing seconds including a pair of three-point field goal attempts as Calvin held on for the win.
Trewhella led Calvin with 17 points on 7-for-14 shooting while also dishing out four assists against just one turnover in 29 minutes of action. Meckes battled through 23 minutes of playing time to collect nine points, eight rebounds, three steals, two blocks and a pair of assists while freshman Dustin Smith (Hamilton HS) tossed in a career-high nine points off the bench.
Bench scoring had been at a premium for most of Calvin's non-conference slate but in Saturday night's game with Alma, Calvin's reserves scored 24 of its 64 points
Calvin also held a 42-38 rebounding advantage while holding Alma to 38 percent field goal shooting.
Alma was led in scoring by Mike Murphy who chalked up 14 points while Drew Barnhart had 11 points and Cory Massey and Greg Nelson 10 points apiece.
Calvin returns to action next Wednesday when it hosts Adrian at 7:30 p.m.
