ALBION * In a big MIAA game Thursday night, Calvin held on to defeat Albion 51-50 at Albion's Kresge Gymnasium. Calvin extends its win streak to 8 straight games and holds a10-1 overall and a 4-0 MIAA record. The Knights ended Albion's (9-4, 2-3 MIAA) three-game winning streak. Currently, Calvin is ranked 17th in the nation among Division III women's basketball teams on the D3hoops.com Top-25 poll.

Calvin's win marks the 75th win over Albion in 91 match-ups in school history and the fifth straight win over Albion. Last season, Calvin defeated Albion all four times the teams met, including defeating the Britons for the MIAA Tournament Championship game and the Sweet 16 game of the NCAA Division III Tournament. That the youthful Knights were able to extend this string of wins against a veteran Albion team, albeit a close game, is a great accomplishment.

Lisa Winkle (Grand Rapids/South Christian) also made it to the record books tonight, being only the 10th player in Calvin women's basketball history to reach the 1,000 point mark. Winkle was only nine points away from this record before tonight's game. Winkle also posted her 20th career double-double this evening with 15 points and 14 rebounds; she also added 5 blocks.

Calvin led for most of the first half after freshman Marcia Harris (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian) broke a 4-4 tie with a made jumper. Albion's Emi Guimond tied the game at 14-14 with 5:30 left in the half, making a three-point shot. Another Albion three soon followed, this time shot by Megan Seely, giving Albion a one point lead, 17-16. Calvin then put its offensive game into full force, going on an 11-1 run late in the half, which included a jumper by sophomore Erica Boonstra (Crestwood, IL/Chicago Christian) and a three point shot by sophomore Lindsey Peuler (Grandville/Grandville). The Knights led by nine points 27-18 with 1:33 remaining. Albion held Calvin at 27 and scored three more points, allowing Calvin to lead 27-21 at halftime.

Albion seemed to come into the second half of play with much determination, going on a 9-3 run, broken only by a Peuler three-point shot. The Albion run tied the game at 30-30. However, Calvin soon went back on the offensive, scoring 13 points and only allowing two from the Bulldogs. With under 9:00 of playing time, Calvin led Albion 43-32. Yet the game was not yet in the bag. The Bulldogs pulled off an amazing 13-1 run, bringing themselves to a one-point lead with only 2:14 left on the clock, 45-44. Lisa Winkle made two consecutive lay-ups to give Calvin a three point lead with 1:20 left to play. An Albion free-throw shot brought the score to 48-46. Peuler answered with two made free-throws, giving Calvin a 50-46 lead and leaving only 23 seconds on the clock. Albion answered with a lay-up, bringing themselves back with-in two. Marcia Harris gave Calvin a crucial three-point lead with a made free-throw with only 7 seconds on the clock. Albion, down 48-51 managed t!
o get off a last second shot, but it was only good for two points, leaving the Knights with the slim 51-50 victory.

Lisa Winkle led Calvin with 15 points, 14 rebounds, and 4 blocks. Harris added 10 points, Peuler contributed 8 points, and Boonstra had 6 points.

Albion's Liz Marcuz, who was the high-scorer with 13 points, fouled out early in the second half. She was followed by Emi Guimond, who had 9 points and Kellyn Glynn with six points.

The Calvin women are scheduled to face conference opponent St. Mary's this Saturday at the Calvin Fieldhouse in a 3:00 game.
