Calvin Swimming and Diving Teams Split With Hope

HOLLAND * The Calvin men's and women's swimming and diving teams split a pair of MIAA dual meets at rival Hope Saturday afternoon with the men falling 130-102 while the women were victorious 141-98.
The Calvin women's team is now 7-1 overall including 3-0 against MIAA competition. The Calvin men's team is now 2-6 overall and 1-2 against MIAA competition.
In the women's meet Saturday, Calvin was paced by junior Becky Weima (Grand Rapids Christian HS) who was recently named the Division III Swimmer of the Week by Collegeswimming.com. Weima posted a pair of NCAA III conditional qualifying times in winning the 50 freestyle (23.97) and 500 freestyle (5:06.96). Freshman diver Erica Deur (Holland Christian HS) was also a double-winner, taking first place on the one-meter (244.15) and three-meter (235.80) boards.
Other individual winners for the Calvin women included senior Abby Johnson (Grand Haven HS) in the 200 IM (2:15.09), sophomore Kat Vinson in the 100 freestyle (55.23) and junior Barbara Frazier (Placerville, CA) in the 200 breaststroke (2:32.95). Vinson also had a strong swim in the 50 freestyle, taking third with a season-best time of 24.88.
Calvin swept the top three spots in three events as the Knights went 1-2-3 in both the one and three-meter diving competitions and also in the 200 breaststroke. In the one-meter diving competition, senior Julie Erickson (Libertyville, IL) was second (204.50) and sophomore Lis Beal (Grand Rapids Christian HS) third (198.10). Erickson was also second on the three-meter board (213.05) and Beal third (198.75). In addition to Frazier's win in the 200 breaststroke, the Knights also received a second place time of 2:34.86 from sophomore Sarah Abbot (East Grand Rapids HS) and a third place effort (2:37.54) from senior Laura Miersma (Holland Christian HS).
Calvin's 400 medley relay team of Johnson, junior Alex Wilson (Ellsworth, OH), freshman Julie Wolfe (Westerville, OH) and Vinson took first place with a time of 4:08.62.
On the men's side, Calvin received a first place swim from junior Andrew Resseguie in the 50 freestyle as he clocked in with a season-best time of 21.68 while also taking second in the 100 freestyle with a season-best time of 47.82. Freshman diver Jack Ryfiak (Grand Rapids Christian HS) was also a winner for the Knights, taking first place on the one-meter board (232.25) while adding a second place on the three-meter board (233.05).
Freshman Keith Conrad (Wheaton, IL) added a first place swim in the 200 breaststroke (2:20.05) while also placing second in the 500 freestyle (5:04.49). Calvin also took first place in both relays as its 400 medley relay team of sophomore Joe Gluvers (Rocklin, CA), Conrad, sophomore John Boumgarden (Naperville, IL) and junior Peter Tuuk (Grand Rapids Christian HS) took first place with a time of 3:42.92 while its 400 freestyle relay team of Resseguie, Boumgarden, Tuuk and senior Luke Bagnall (Marshalltown, IA) took first place with time of 3:12.79.
Bagnall added second place finishes in the 200 IM (2:03.03) and 200 backstroke (2:03.90) while Tuuk was second in the 200 freestyle (1:48.21). Gluvers was also second in the 200 butterfly (2:08.06).
Both Calvin teams will now return to training and prepare for the Eastern Michigan Invitational scheduled to be held December 2 and 3 in Ypsilanti.
