CALVIN SPORTS REPORT (Part One) FOR NOV. 19, 2005

MEN'S BASKETBALL - CAPTURES TIP-OFF TOURNAMENT TITLE
Calvin 82, Whitworth 67

GRAND RAPIDS -- Calvin College faced Whitworth College (WA) in the Championship game this afternoon. Calvin (2-0) took the game and the Tournament Title with an 82-67 win.

Calvin has now won four of a possible five Calvin Tip-Off Tournament crowns.

The Knights had an early 6-0 run, leading 12-6 with only four minutes played. Calvin led by as much as nine points when freshman Caleb Veldhouse (Sioux Falls, SD/Sioux Falls Christian) nailed a three-point shot. Calvin kept the lead through the next four minutes as Andy Draayer made three three-pointers within those four minutes of play. Calvin led 32-24. However, Whitworth (1-1) took the lead with just under two minutes left in the second half with a jumper by Lance Pecht. Veldhouse tied the game and then gave Calvin a 38-37 lead with two made free-throw shots. A lay-up by senior Kyle Trewhella (Rockford/Rockford) brought the Knights up 40-37, but Whitworth's George Tucker sank two consecutive shots to give Whitworth a 41-40 lead at the end of the half.

Calvin was held at 40 in the second half while Whitworth went on a 7-0 run, including two three-pointers by Jon Young. Draayer broke the run with his fourth three-point shot of the game. Young answered in swift fashion with another three, 51-43 Whitworth. A jumper and two made free throws by Trewhella brought the Knights within six and down 49-55. Trewhella made a three-pointer and Draayer sunk one more three and a jumper, tying up the game 59-59. He then gave the Knights a two-point lead with two made free-throws. Tucker tied the game again, 61-61 with two made free-throws of his own. Calvin then went on an 11-3 run as Trewhella extended Calvin's lead to eight, 72-64 with two made free-throws. Tucker made a free-throw, bringing Whitworth within seven points. However, Calvin 10-2 run, with all of the Knights 10 points coming from free-throws, including six from Draayer, two each from junior Josh Meckes (Bay City, Saginaw Valley Lutheran) and freshman Dustin Smith (H!
amilton/Hamilton). Calvin ended the half with a 15 point lead, defeating Whitworth 82-67.

Calvin was 24-24 at the line this afternoon, setting a new single-game free-throw percentage record. Eight of those free-throws came from the hands of Draayer.

With the win, Calvin's Head Coach Kevin VandeStreek moved past the late Barney Steen and into second place on Calvin's All-time list for coaching victories. In 10 years at Calvin, Vande Streek is 189-66 for a winning percentage of .741.

Leading the Knights in scoring was Trewhella with 25 points, followed by Draayer who had 22 points and 8 rebounds, Meckes with 10 points and 9 rebounds, Veldhouse with 9 points, junior Kyle Snoeyink (Grandville/Calvin Christian) with 8 points and 4 rebounds, and Smith with 6 points and 4 rebounds.

Whitworth's Young scored 15 points, Bryan Williams scored 14 points, Pecht had 13 points and 5 rebounds, and Tucker had 12 points.

Grace Bible College defeated Wisconsin-Lutheran 85-81 in the Consolation game of the Tip-Off Tournament hosted this weekend by Calvin College.

Leading scorers for Grace Bible were Kenny VanRyn with 24 points, Jimmy Booth with 19 points and 13 rebounds, Tom VanderWal with 15 points, and Travis Chase with 11 points.

For Wisconsin-Lutheran Lewis Jiles lead with 25 points while Brian Hagel had 12 points and 6 rebounds and Drew Dunlop scored 10 points.

Calvin's Trewhella was named tournament MVP. The All-Tournament team also included Meckes, Wisconsin Lutheran's Lewis Giles, Whitworth's Williams, and Kenny VanRuyn from Grace Bible.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL * CAPTURES WI-LUTHERAN TIP-OFF TITLE

MILWAUKEE, WI * Calvin captured the championship of the Wisconsin Lutheran Tip-Off Tournament with a pair of weekend victories. Calvin opened the tournament with a 54-50 victory over Simpson College (IA) Friday night and then topped host Wisconsin Lutheran 80-57 in the championship game Saturday afternoon.

In the win over Simpson, Calvin held a 36-19 halftime lead but could not hold onto the double-digit margin as Simpson stormed back to tie the game at 48 with two minutes remaining. Freshman Sarah Patridge (East Lansing HS) then stepped up with a layup inside to give the Knights a 50-48 lead and sophomore Charis Larson (Grand Rapids Christian HS) followed with a short jumper on a feed from freshman Kelly Trewhella (Rockford HS) to build a 52-48 lead. Trewhella then hit two free throws in the final 30 seconds while sophomore Lindsey Peuler (Grandville HS) came up with a pivotal steal to seal the win.

Junior Lisa Winkle (South Christian HS) led Calvin in the win with 12 points and seven blocked shots before fouling out. Freshman Marcia Harris (Grand Rapids Christian HS) also had 10 points before fouling out. Peuler added seven points and two steals while Partridge had eight points and four boards. Freshman Jennifer DeFauw (Grosse Pointe North HS) also came up with some key plays in the second half, scoring four points and grabbing five rebounds.

In Saturday's championship game victory over Wisconsin Lutheran, Lisa Winkle exploded for a career-high 36 points on 14 of 19 shooting while also grabbing 12 rebounds to notch her 15th collegiate double-double. Harris also had a big game with 20 points, five rebounds and four assists as she connected on nine of her 15 field goal attempts. Sophomore Erica Boonstra (Chicago Christian HS) also picked up nine points while Peuler had eight points and three assists.

For her efforts, Winkle was named tournament MVP while Harris also landed a spot on the all-tournament team.

Calvin returns to action on Tuesday when it travels to cross-town rival Aquinas for a non-conference game slated to start at 6:00 p.m.
