CALVIN MIDWEST INVITATIONAL RECAP
(Written by Jeff Febus and Annalise VenHuizen '08)
Volleyball 2-0 at Midwest Invitational - Takes 2nd in MIAA Regular Season
Standings
GRAND RAPIDS - One of the oldest records in the Calvin volleyball books is no
longer. In a 30-11, 30-25, 30-17 victory over Olivet Friday afternoon, Calvin
sophomore setter Katie Zondervan of Lakewood, California, racked up 14 service
aces, breaking the record of 11 aces set in 1986 by none other than current
Calvin head coach Amber Warners. Warners was then a freshman setter and was a
catalyst behind Calvin's drive to the 1986 NCAA III National Championship
Finals.
Calvin's match over Olivet served two purposes on Friday as it counted as an
MIAA regular season match and as a first round pool play match in Calvin's
own Midwest Invitational.
With the victory, Calvin finished its MIAA regular season campaign alone in
second place in the MIAA regular season standings with a 13-3 conference mark.
The Knights also gain the number-two seed for next week's MIAA Tournament and
will host a first round match Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m. against Tri-State
University.
The first game was smooth sailing for the Knights as they won 30-11, using 16
unanswered points to pull away for the win. Olivet stepped up the intensity in
the second game, however, with the Knights winning by only five points, 30-25.
Calvin again dominated in the third game, defeating the Comets 30-17.
Leading Calvin in kills was junior Lorilyn Vogel (Orange City, IA/Unity
Christian) with 14 kills, followed by senior Christine Hendricks (Cincinnati,
OH/Turpin) who contributed 10 kills and nine digs, sophomore Molly Krikke
(Greenwich, OH/South Central) with 9 kills, and senior Katie Schultz
(Escondido, CA/Escondido Calvin Christian) who had 7 kills and nine digs.
Freshman Lauren DeGroot (Tulare, CA/Central Valley Christian) had 10 kills.
Highlighting Calvin's victory was sophomore setter Katie Zondervan
(Lakewood, CA/Valley Christian). Besides amassing 37 assists and 7 digs,
Zondervan had 14 service aces, setting a new Calvin single-season record for
service aces. The previous record of 11 was held by Amber Warners, the Calvin
Head Coach.
Leading Olivet was Sydney Kuipers, who had eight kills and seven digs. Libero
Smith had 12 digs and Jessica Petkus had 8 digs.
Calvin then picked up a hard-fought three-game victory over Anderson in its
second match Friday night to advance to Saturday's Pool A bracket. Calvin
defeated Anderson (16-13) by scores of 30-27, 36-34, 30-18. In game two,
Calvin fought off a 29-26 deficit to pull out the win.
Vogel amassed 21 kills and an attack percentage of .442 to pace the Knights
while Hendricks had 13 kills, 10 digs and four blocks. Schultz was next with
12 kills and 15 digs
while Krikke had nine kills and six blocks. Calvin's specialists also
performed well as Zondervan had 54 assists, six aces and 12 digs while DeGroot
had 11 digs.
Calvin will be joined in Saturday's Midwest Invitational Pool A by
nationally-ranked Ohio Northern and league rival Hope. Ohio Northern and Hope
also went 2-0 on Friday.
