GRAND RAPIDS - The Knights of Calvin College (10-2-1) extended their
undefeated MIAA streak as they defeated the visiting Bulldogs of Adrian College
(2-11-0) 10-0 while also getting to the double-digit win column for the
seventeenth straight season. Over the last 17 years, Calvin has an impressive
won-loss record of 226-77-11 for a winning percentage of .731. Senior
goalkeeper Linda Heilman (Byron Center/South Christian) extended her streak of
shutouts in MIAA play to eight games while freshman Lauren Bergstrom
(Rochester, MN/Rochester Century) earned a hat trick as she had four goals in
the Calvin rout.
There were no goals scored in the first 25 minutes of play but Calvin's
constant offensive pressure finally paid off as junior forward Jill Capel
(Hudsonville/Unity Christian) scored her eleventh goal of the season off a
header coming in from a fourth consecutive corner kick assisted by senior Karla
VanBeveren (Ancaster, ON/Hamilton District Christian) and freshman Michelle
Koele (Denver, CO/Denver Christian) at the 26:42 mark. A few minutes later
with about 13 minutes in the half, senior Kara Zuidema (San Marcos,
CA/Escondido Calvin Christian) blasted in a shot on the ground to get her
fourth goal of the season off of a beautiful pass by junior Sarah Weesies
(Kalamazoo/ Kalamazoo Christian). Five minutes later, Koele knocked it in to
the far post for her second of the year assisted by junior Laura Rooks
(Holland/Holland Christian). Two minutes before the end of the half, Calvin
increased its lead to 4-0 off a dribbler through the goalkeeper's hands by
Bergstrom and the assist was given to VanBeveren.
The floodgates opened for Calvin College in the second half as it continued to
keep the ball in Adrian territory. The first of the second half coming two
minutes in when freshman Brittney Talbert (Whitefish Bay, WI/Whitefish Bay) got
her second goal of the year by shooting it into the net as the goalkeeper left
the box and the assist was given to Bergstrom. About 18 minutes in, freshman
Elise Willet (Grand Junction, CO/Fruita Monument) scored her first collegiate
goal on an unassisted ball. With about 18 minutes to go, Bergstrom scored an
unassisted goal off of a nice move around the defense. Bergstrom received her
hat trick with an assist from freshman Elizabeth Ribbens (Tinley Park,
IL/Victor J. Andrew). With just under 10 minutes to go in the game, freshman
Jessica Vegter (Hudsonville/Unity Christian) knocked it in off of a rebound to
get her fourth goal of the year and the shot was unassisted. Bergstrom then
scored her fourth goal of the game and fifth of the year as she blasted it in
unassisted over the goalkeeper's head.
The Knights dominated the entire game by keeping constant pressure on the
Adrian defense and by outscoring their opponent 57-0. Just about every Calvin
player got in a shot with Bergstrom and Capel leading the pack with 10 and 7
shots respectively.
Adrian goalkeeper Reshia Jamieson had 12 saves while substitute goalkeeper
Ashley Reece had 3. The Calvin College Knights take on Tri-State (2-10-0) away
for their next contest this coming Saturday, October 15 at noon.
