Calvin 3, Alma 1 (27-30, 30-20, 30-24, 30-28)

GRAND RAPIDS - The Knights captured a crucial MIAA victory tonight as they defeated Alma College in four games: 27-30, 30-2, 30-24, 30-28. Calvin (15-6, 8-3 MIAA) is now tied for second in the league with Alma (8-14, 8-3 MIAA). The victory was also Calvin's first regular season win over Alma since the 2001 season.

Calvin pulled ahead of Alma in game one, going on a 9-2 point streak, giving Calvin a 17-10 lead. However, Alma quickly bounced back with a 10-1 streak, coming two points ahead of the Knights at 21-19. Alma pulled away with the 30-27 win in game one.

Game two was much more evenly played, though Calvin gained an early 13-6 lead. The Scots called a time-out and came back, bringing themselves within two points at 19-17. Calvin however, went on to score an amazing 11 points to Alma's three, giving the Knights a ten-point 30-20 victory. In game three, Calvin again pulled ahead at the end to an easy 30-24 victory.

Alma led most of game four, making the Knights uneasy. Calvin tied it up at 25-25. The Scots tied Calvin at 26-26, but Calvin managed to gain two more points, widening the gap to 28-26. The Scots returned from a time-out and edged within one of Calvin at 29-28. Calvin Coach Amber Warners then called a time out to regroup the team. "There seems to be a thing in volleyball that when one team calls a time-out, it stops the momentum for the other team. I wanted to do that, as well as set up a play," said Warners.

The time-out strategy seemed to work, as Calvin stopped the Scots. The play was sophomore setter Katie Zondervan to senior Christine Hendricks for the big kill. With that, Calvin triumphed 30-28.

Hendricks (Cincinnati, OH/Turpin) shined with a match-high 23 kills in the four games (tying Vogel and Krikke with this statistic) as well as a match-high 30 digs (tying Schultz who also holds this statistic). Sophomore middle hitter Molly Krikke (Greenwich, OH/South Central) flowed with 20 kills. Junior Lorilyn Vogel (Orange City, IA/Unity Christian) contributed 14 kills and senior Katie Schultz (Escondido, CA/Escondido Calvin Christian) had 13 kills and 19 digs. Freshman libero Lauren DeGroot (Tulare, CA/Central Valley Christian) had 29 digs and sophomore Katie Zondervan (Lakewood, CA/Valley Christian) had a season-high 71 assists in the four games and also had 25 digs.

Either Hendricks or Krikke was involved in almost every good play the Knights saw tonight. "Both Molly and Christine did a great job with taking charge of the team tonight, they played outstanding games," said Coach Warners.

Calvin goes into a tough weekend as they participate in a tournament hosted by Elmhurst College on Friday and Saturday. Calvin will face three nationally-ranked teams in Elmhurst, Wisconsin-Platteville, and Wisconsin-Whitewater. Calvin's next home game is a week from today on October 19th against conference-opponent St. Mary's.

MEN'S SOCCER

Calvin 4, Kalamazoo 1

KALAMAZOO * Calvin bounced back from a Saturday loss to rival Hope in strong fashion Tuesday afternoon as the nationally-ranked Knights came up with a 4-1 win at Kalamazoo College.

Ranked 17th in the latest NSCAA Division III Top-25 poll, Calvin (10-2-1 overall, 6-1-0 MIAA) overcame a Kalamazoo goal 36 seconds into Tuesday's match to gain the win. The Hornets (6-6-1 overall, 5-2-0 MIAA) got on the board quickly as Brett Bullard drilled in a shot from the 18-yard line off a pass from Evan Wright.

Calvin struck back with two first half goals however. Senior Kurt Visker (Grand Rapids Christian HS) put the Knights on the board with a goal off a direct kick in the 25th minute and senior Matt Cosnek (Hopewell, PA) followed with his second goal of the year a few minutes later with junior Nick Capisciolto (Unity Christian HS) and freshman Michael Holwerda (Grand Rapids Christian HS) both drawing assists on the play.

Junior Nate Kooi (Lynden, WA) provided an insurance goal in the 74th minute, heading in a corner kick from Capisciolto. Sophomore Zach Kimmel (Kenowa Hills HS) then put the capper on the Calvin win with a goal in the closing two minutes with Cosnek drawing an assist.

Calvin held an 11-4 shots at goal advantage. Senior Joe Westra (Grand Rapids Christian HS) had three saves in nets for the Knights while Stefano Crescenti had six saves for Kalamazoo.
