Cross Country Teams Run Strong at Michigan Intercollegiates
Wolmen's Golf Is Seventh After Day One at MIAA Championships
MEN'S AND WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY
ROCHESTER * The nationally-ranked Calvin men's and women's cross country teams ran strong at the Michigan Intercollegiates Friday afternoon hosted by Oakland University.
Friday's races included teams from across the state of Michigan at the Division I, II and III levels as well as NAIA institutions. The men's competition included 4K and 8K races while the women's competition included 4K and 6K races.
Ranked number-one in the latest Division III Top-25 poll, the Calvin men's cross country team took first place in its 4K race with a team score of 20 points. The 4K race counts the top four finishers instead of the normal top five. Division II Grand Valley State took second with 28 points. Grand Valley's Nathan Peck took first place with a time of 11:45 but close behind was Calvin junior Tim Finnegan (Los Alamos, NM) with a second place time of 11:49. Finnegan was one of four Calvin runners in the top 10 as well as six in the top 16. Calvin's second finisher was junior Harrison Jorritsma (Beamsville, ON) with a fourth place time of 12:00 while freshman Jed Christiansen ()was Calvin's next man with a sixth place time of 12:03. Sophomore Jon Gries (King of Prussia, PA) was Calvin's fourth man, placing eighth with a time of 12:05. Rounding out Calvin's top seven were sophomore Bill Reynolds (Newtown Square, PA) in 11th place (12:09); sophomore Tad Hulst (Zeeland HS) in 1!
6th place (12:13) and junior Ben Hammer (Elk Rapids HS) in 30th place (12:25).
In the men's 8K race, Calvin took seventh with a team score of 178 points. Grand Valley took first place with 40 points. Calvin's top finisher was senior Tyler Zwagerman (Holland Christian HS) in 19th place with a time of 26:21 while freshman teammate Michael O'Shaugnessey was right behind in 20th place with a time of 26:24. Rounding out Calvin's top five were freshman Jared Eliason () in 31st place (26:56), freshman Sawyer Koops in 51st (27:44) and freshman Kevin Rooney (Denver, CO) in 57th (28:06).
On the women's side, 14th-ranked Calvin took fifth in the 4K race with a team score of 112 points. The Knights did not compete in the 6K race. Grand Valley State and the University of Michigan tied for first place in the 4K race with team scores of 23 points. Central Michigan was third with 72 points while Oakland was fourth with 75 points.
Senior Camille Medema (Grand Rapids Christian HS) had a strong effort for the Knights in the 4K race, placing eighth individually with a time of 14:31. Senior Lindsay Rooney (Denver, CO) was the next finisher for Calvin, placing 25th with a time of 14:59. Sophomore Christina Overbeck (Seattle, WA) followed in 38th (15:12) while junior Laura Holtrop (Derwood, MD) was 41st in 15:15. Next for Calvin was freshman Kelly Edwards in 56th (15:38), junior Lydia Singer (Wilmington, DE) in 70th place (15:52) and freshman Anna Pranger in 80th place (16:10).
Both Calvin teams will now break until next Saturday when the compete at the Wisconsin-Oshkosh Invitational.
WOMEN'S GOLF
BATTLE CREEK * After one day of competition, Calvin is seventh at the MIAA Championships hosted by Albion at the Bedford Valley Country Club. The Knights posted a team score of 397 strokes on Friday and return to action for the final round of the tournament and the year Saturday morning.
Senior Annie Huizenga (Unity Christian HS) continued her superb fall with a round of 86 that was good for a tie for eighth place. Junior Abby Stemler (Elk River, MN) also had a stellar first round, firing a season-best score of 94 that was good for 27th place on Friday. Rounding out Calvin's finishers on Saturday were senior Margaret Tassaro (Carnegie, PA) with a 98, freshman Juanita Gibson (Detroit) with a 119 and senior Jodi Offringa (Unity Christian HS) with a round of 134.
Olivet had Friday's top team score at 342 strokes with defending MIAA champion St. Mary's second with a score of 352.
Saturday's action is set to begin at 9:00 a.m.
