MEN'S SOCCER
Calvin opened its 2005 MIAA campaign in winning fashion, blanking visiting Alma 2-0 Wednesday afternoon at Calvin Field.
Ranked 11th in the latest Division III Top-25 poll, Calvin (5-1-1 overall, 1-0-0 MIAA) scored both of its goals in the first half.
Freshman Michael Holwerda (Grand Rapids Christian HS) put the Knights on the board in the 28th minute of play, one-timing a well-struck chip from senior Levi Kool (Holland Christian HS). The Kool assist was his team-leading sixth of the year while the Holwerda goal was his team-leading sixth of the year. Less than five minutes later, sophomore Jared Litty (Hudsonville HS) and junior Nick Capisciolto (Unity Christian HS) combined for a goal of high-light reel quality as Capisciolto shook loose from a defender with a spin-o-rama move in the right side of the box, lofted a chip to the far post, and Litty followed with a diving header into a wide-open goal. Litty's goal was his fifth of the year and third in the last two games.
Calvin continued to pressure throughout the remainder of the game but did not find the back of the net again.
Calvin held a 33-9 shots at goal advantage with senior goalkeeper Joe Westra (Grand Rapids Christian HS) collecting three saves for the Knights while registering the shutout victory.
Calvin returns to action on Saturday when it journeys to Albion for a key MIAA matchup scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m.
