CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 17TH
(Part One)

WOMEN'S SOCCER
Calvin 7, Tri-State 0

Jill Capel scored a hat trick for the second straight game as Calvin (4-1-1, 3-0) shut-out Tri-State University (3-3, 0-3) 7-0 on Saturday at the Calvin Field. Capel, a junior from Unity Christian, now has seven goals on the season. Jill also added two assists, giving her eight points on the game

The game was the second straight shut-out for senior goalkeeper Linda Heilman (South Christian) after defeating Adrian on Tuesday by the same 7-0 score. Heilman made one save for the victory.

Calvin got on the board in the 23rd minute when junior Sarah Weesies (Kalamazoo Christian) scored on a turn-around shot on an assist from Capel. The goal was Weesies' team-leading eighth goal of the season. In the twenty-sixth minute, Calvin added another goal when Capel set up senior Kara Zuidema (San Marcos, CA) for a redirect shot to give Calvin a 2-0 lead.

Two and a half minutes later, Capel scored her first of the game, this time with Zuidema returning the favor with an assist. Capel was able to gather a tip pass and burry it into the net inside the far post. Junior Tricia DeVries (GR Christian) finished off the scoring in the first half for Calvin when she chipped an intended pass over the defense and off the left goal-post and in for her first of the season in the 35th minute.

Calvin came out with offensive pressure at the out-set of the second half and capitalized when Capel put her second of the game in the net, another blast, this time assisted by freshman Elizabeth Ribbens (Tinely Park, IL) in the 52nd minute. Only six minutes later, Capel finished the hat-trick by knocking in a pass from Weesies. Calvin added one more goal for good measure when freshman Jessican Vegter (Unity Christian) knocked in a pass from freshman Elise Willet (Grand Junction, CO).

Calvin led the Thunder in shots by an enormous 45-3, including 23-1 in shots on goal. The next game for the women is Tuesday, at Kalamazoo; a 4:00PM start time.

The game matched fourth-year Calvin head coach up against Concordia head coach Tom Saleska. Saleska was the head varsity boy's soccer coach at Mount Clemens High School for several years in the 1980's including from 1983-to-1986 when Hughes was a player underneath him.

Ranked 13th nationally, Calvin (4-1-1 overall) jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a goal by freshman striker Michael Holwerda (Grand Rapids Christian HS) in the ninth minute of play on an assist from older brother David Holwerda (Grand Rapids Christian HS). The Holwerda goal was his fifth of the year and came on a right-to-left blast from 15 yards out that found the top shelf of the goal.

Concordia (3-2-2) came back with a goal by Marcin Rudnicki in the 20th minute of play as he slipped behind the Calvin defense and sent a low hard shot past Calvin goalkeeper Joe Westra (Grand Rapids Christian HS).

After regrouping at halftime, Calvin jumped on the visiting Falcons two minutes into the second half as sophomore Jared Litty (Hudsonville HS) scored on a 20-yard cracker on a feed from senior Levi Kool (Holland Christian HS). Litty then scored the clincher in the 75th minute of play with Kool drawing another assist. The final Litty goal was his fourth of the year while Kool collected his fifth assist of the season on the play.

Calvin held a 14-12 shots at goal advantage with Westra collecting four saves in net for the Knights.

Calvin will now prepare to open its MIAA campaign next Wednesday when it hosts Alma at 4:00 p.m. at Calvin Field.

VOLLEYBALL
(Calvin 1-3 at Wittenberg Border Battle Invite - Upsets ONU)

SPRINGFIELD, OH * Calvin closed out play at the rugged Wittenberg University Border Battle with a four-game upset victory over 10th-ranked Ohio Northern University to salvage a 1-3 record at the two-day tournament.

The tournament featured teams from around the state of Ohio as well as several teams from the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association. For the most part, the MIAA took it on the chin against Ohio competition as the four teams representing the state of Ohio dominated the first-ever Border Battle, winning 14 of the 16 matches played over two days in the Wittenberg University HPER Center.

The host Tigers, ranked No. 3 in the nation, finished a perfect 4-0, winning all 12 games in their four matches against Alma, Calvin, Kalamazoo and Hope. Also finishing with a perfect 4-0 record, albeit by a much more arduous route, were the Mount St. Joseph Lions. MSJ was pushed to five games by Alma on Friday and Hope on Saturday.
Ohio Northern and Hiram each finished with 3-1 records in the tournament. The only Michigan wins were recorded by Hope in the first match of the weekend over Hiram and by Calvin in a four-game upset win over Ohio Northern on Saturday.

Calvin opened the tournament with a 30-24, 30-26, 30-27 loss to sixth-ranked Mount St. Joseph on Friday and then dropped a 30-17, 30-18, 30-23 to third-ranked Wittenberg later in the evening. In the loss to Mount St. Joseph, junior Kristen Kalb (Stow, OH) had 12 kills with junior Lorilyn Vogel (Orange City, IA) adding 11 kills. Sophomore setter Katie Zondervan (Lakewood, CA) added 36 assists. Against Wittenberg senior Christine Hendricks (Cincinnati, OH) had seven kills with Zondervan collecting 19 digs.

Calvin opened play on Saturday with a 30-24, 30-28, 30-21 loss to Hiram with Hendricks picking up 12 kills while Zondervan had 22 assists.
In the win over Ohio Northern, sophomore Molly Krikke (Greenwich, OH) came up with a huge effort, recording a career-high 23 kills while Vogel was close behind with 18 kills. Hendricks also notched double-digits in kills with 13 while also chalking up seven blocks. Zondervan had 26 assists while freshman Lauren DeGroot (Tulare, CA) added 29.
Calvin returns to action on Wednesday when it journeys to Olivet for a conference match at 7:00 p.m.
