CALVIN WEEKEND SPORTS REPORT FOR SEPT. 2 & 3, 2005

MEN'S SOCCER - KNIGHTS CAPTURE TOURNAMENT TITLE AT
ANDERSON U.

INDIANAPOLIS, IN - Calvin captured the championship of the two-day Anderson
University Pepsi Classic Friday and Saturday behind a pair of high-scoring
performances.

Ranked 16th in the latest Division III Top-25 poll, Calvin opened tournament
play on Friday with a 4-1 victory over Great Lakes regional opponent Anderson
University. Calvin then closed out the tournament with a 4-0 win over Urbana
(L) Saturday afternoon.

In the victory over Anderson Friday, all of the scoring took place in the
first half as the Knights held a 4-1 lead after 45 minutes of play. Junior
midfielder Nick Capisciolto (Unity Christian HS) scored a pair of goals in the
first half surge while freshman Michael Holwerda (Grand Rapids Christian HS)
and senior Kurt Visker (Grand Rapids Christian HS) also had goals. Visker,
Holwerda, sophomore A.J. Dufendach (Forest Hills Northern HS) and senior Levi
Kool (Holland Christian HS) also picked up assists for the Knights who outshot
the homestanding Ravens 12-10.

Senior goalkeeper Joe Westra (Grand Rapids Christian HS) went the distance in
nets for Calvin, collecting 4 saves.

On Saturday, Holwerda scored twice in the first half in staking the Knights to
a 2-0 halftime lead. Visker then scored on an assist from Kool five minutes
into the second half with sophomore Jared Litty (Hudsonville HS), then
converting a feed from Capisciolto in the 75th minute. Westra and freshman
goaltender Matt Gardner (Worthington, OH) split time in goal for Calvin with
Westra collecting 3 saves and Gardner one save.

Calvin will now break until next Friday when it co-hosts the Cal Bergsma
Memorial Tournament with Hope with Calvin hosting John Carroll Friday at 4:00
pm while Hope will host Wheaton (IL) Friday at 4:00 p.m.

WOMEN'S SOCCER

SAN DIEGO, CA - Calvin closed out its swing through Southern California with a
weekend split, falling to national NAIA power Azusa-Pacific 2-1 on Friday
before bouncing back to top Point Loma Nazarene 2-1 Saturday evening.

Friday's loss to Azusa-Pacific proved to be a heartbreaker as the Knights
took a 1-0 lead on a unassisted first half goal by junior Sarah Weesies
(Kalamazoo Christian HS) only to see APU score two second half goals including
the game-winner with just 1:08 left in regulation time. APU outshot Calvin
30-9. Senior goalkeeper Linda Heilman (South Christian HS) kept Calvin in the
game with 13 saves. Azusa-Pacific reached the NAIA national tournament in
2004.

On Saturday, Calvin edged host Point Loma Nazarene 2-1 as junior Jill Capel
(Unity Christian HS) scored an unassisted goal in the first half with Weesies
giving the Knights a 2-0 lead on a goal in the 68th minute. Point Loma
Nazarene came back with a goal in the 78th minute but Heilman held strong in
nets for the Knights down the stretch to preserve the victory.

Heilman had nine saves for Calvin as Point Loma outshot the Knights 25-6.
Calvin will now prepare for its MIAA opener next Wednesday when it travels to
Olivet for a 4:00 p.m. contest.

VOLLEYBALL Knights Capture Mount Union Invitational Crown
ALLIANCE, OH - Calvin swept through the two-day Mount Union Invitational with
an unblemished 5-0 record. Calvin topped host Mount Union twice, defeating the
Purple Raiders 30-15, 27-30, 30-22, 30-21 on Friday and then 28-30, 30-21,
30-26, 30-25 in the championship tilt Saturday evening. Calvin also picked up
victories over Concord (OH), Waynesburg (PA) and Westminster (PA) during the
tournament.

The tournament proved to a happy Ohio homecoming for Calvin junior Kristen
Kalb (Stow, OH) and sophomore Molly Krikke (Greenwich, OH) as both players were
named to the all-tournament team along with sophomore setter Katie Zondervan
(Lakewood, CA).

Calvin will now prepare to travel to cross-town rival Aquinas College on
Wednesday for a non-conference match against the Saints at 7:00 p.m. at the
Aquinas College Fieldhouse.

MEN'S GOLF

MARSHALL - A youthful Calvin men's golf team turned in an impressive two-day
showing at the Olivet College Comet Invitational held at the Bedford Valley
Country Club as the Knights tied for seventh in a 21-team field with a team
score of 624 strokes. Hope College captured the tournament title with a team
score of 611.

Calvin's top individual finisher was freshman Drew Virkus (Kalamazoo
Christian HS) who finished tied for 10th with a two-day total of 153 strokes
(75-78). Calvin's next finisher was senior Ryan Fischer (North Haledon, NJ)
with a score of 155 (78-77). He was followed by Calvin junior Jeff TenBrink
(Kalamazoo Christian HS) with a score of 159 (75-84); freshman Brad Tindall
(Vicksburg HS) with a score of 161 (83-78) and junior Tim VanVugt (Milwaukee,
WI) with a score of 166 (86-80).

Calvin will now prepare to open its MIAA schedule next week.
