Calvin Sixth in Final Sports Academy Director's Cup Standings
GRAND RAPIDS -- For the 10th consecutive year, Calvin has posted a top-25
finish in the final NCAA III Sports Academy Director's Cup standings. In the
final 2004-2005 standings, Calvin has finished sixth with a school record 617
points.
The sixth-place finish matches Calvin's best-ever finish as it also placed
sixth during the 1999-2000 academic year. This year's total of 617 points
however surpasses the 1999-2000 total of 561 points. Calvin's sixth place
finish also marks its third top-10 finish as it also placed seventh during the
1998-99 academic year.
Calvin is one of only 10 schools to finish in the top-25 every year that the
competition has been held at the NCAA III level.
Joining Calvin in the group are Williams (MA), College of New Jersey, Amherst
(MA), Middlebury (VT), Ithaca (NY), Wisconsin-LaCrosse, SUNY-Cortland and Emory
(Ga.).
The U.S. Sports Academy Director's Cup is based on points earned by teams that
compete in NCAA Championship events and is presented annually by the National
Association of Collegiate Director's of Athletics (NACDA) to the best overall
collegiate athletics program in the country. The NACDA Director's Cup race is
held at the NCAA I, II and III levels and also for NAIA institutions.
Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in NCAA III Championship
competition in up to 18 sports -- nine for men and nine for women. Each
national champion receives 100 points with a national runner-up finish worth 90
points. Third place is worth 80 points and fourth place finishes count for 75
points with a sliding point scale continuing on down by order of finish.
Williams of Massachusetts, captured the NCAA III Sports Academy Director's Cup
for the ninth straight year, finishing with a commanding first place total of
1,068.25 points while Middlebury (Vt.) placed second with 900 points.
The final standings include the spring sports of baseball, men's golf, men's
and women's tennis, softball, men's and women's lacrosse, women's water
polo, women's rowing and men's and women's outdoor track and field.
Calvin picked up 161 points during the spring sports season as its women's
track and field took second at the NCAA III Championships while its men's
track and field team took sixth. The finish by the Calvin women was worth 87.5
points in the Director's Cup standings while the men's finish was worth
73.5 points.
Calvin scored in eight sports during the 2004-05 academic year.
During the fall the Calvin men's cross country team earned its second
consecutive national title, earning Calvin 100 points. The Calvin men's
soccer team and women's volleyball team also reached the second round of
their respective NCAA III Tournaments, earning 50 points apiece.
Calvin then put together a spectacular winter sports campaign, posting three
top 10 national finishes as its men's basketball team finished third (83
points), its women's basketball team reached the Elite Eight of its national
tournament for a fifth place finish (73) while its women's swimming and
diving team tied for 10th (67.5 points). In fact, all four of Calvin's winter

with 382.5 points.
